If they want him, couldnt they just wait a year until he is unrestricted to offer him a contract in 2016?

It's hard to tell whether Leonard will become an UFA. He could probably get a max in 2016 too, but then he would only get the QO (4 M$) next season. That would mean leaving 12.5 M $ on the table next season in order to collect (a lot) more in the following seasons, but also waiting later to sign his next, even bigger max contract (if he earns that).

I would guess that someone signs him to a max offer sheet, and that the Spurs match it.
