And he can give SOME rim protection...why not?

The 76ers have agreed to waive JaVale McGee in time for him to sign with a playoff contender, according to USA Today's Sam Amick.

How does the waivers process work?

Any team can claim him in the worst to first sequence?

Are they liable for his full salary going forward?

Philadelphia will reportedly pay McGee the full amount he's owed, including a $12 million payout next season, and he's likely to sign a minimum deal to give a playoff-bound team more frontcourt depth..

The way I understand it is if a team claims McGee off the waiver wire they are required to pay his full salary of the contract he is currently on. If he passes waivers then he is free to sign with any team he wishes, for whatever money/new contract they decide to give him.

I believe it is a bidding process on waivers, so you can bid how much you want to pay with the team that bids the most getting the player.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

Looks like the Celtics found their starting center!  ;D

Almost two years later and some of ours fans still don't know anything about Brad Stevens.

care to enlighten me?  im not a fan of mcgee, but id love to know why hes off limits when it comes to brad stevens
actually, i need enlightenment about both CBS and mcgee myself. CBS did a credible job with turner so far.
never mind.

Ten teams, mostly playoff contenders, have already expressed interest in free agent to be center JaVale McGee, a source told Yahoo Sports.

That's interesting. Not all of them are playoff contenders.

Looks like a third of the league is already doing that.

This is not true, this was only true for the amnesty waiver process.

To place a waiver claim you assume the full contract, which is what Philly did to met the salary floor with Thomas Robinson.

The bidding process actually starts once he clears waivers (which he will, as the 6ers got a first to take on his contract).  Once he clears, then hes a free agent teams can offer money to.  If the C's wanted to take a chance, they still have a portion of the MLE left, and so can offer him more than the minimum, and thus beat other teams' offers, by about double.

The process you're thinkng of only applies to amnestied players.

not seeing the appeal of Mcgee.  no drive to play hard (or play for that matter)

the team chemistry seems pretty good right now with everyone pulling together and giving top effort.  really reluctant to add someone who won't do the same.

good points. now a question. would it be possible for the celtics to take on player(s) using their trade exemptions, thereby allowing another team to take on mcgee? I am thinking along the lines of what ainge did to acquire zeller, thornton, and the 1st round pick.
