Maybe protection on the pick? Minny figures to be significantly better in 2 years anyway.

Edit: I know Payne hasn't done a thing in the NBA, but this hopefully, if only slightly, might help them out of the bottom 12 next year. At least they're demonstrating something resembling more of a win-now move.

This is a surprising trade, it will be tough to pass judgement until the pick protection is revealed. I know its Loto protected in 2017 the interesting thing will be 18,19. If it switches to 2nds then its a great deal for Minn. Payne could be a very nice 3rd big who is a stretch 4 with good size. ATL seems to be clearing space to bring in vets to push for the finals this year.

A possibility, but I think they'll want to use the cap room on something more during the trade deadline.  Ray Allen is more of a post-deadline acquisition I think, for whomever winds up with him.

What a weird sequence of trades.  Flip has had the pedal to the metal on this tank effort all year.  He dumps Mo Williams and I imagine he'll cut Neal.  I wouldn't be surprised to see KMart or Thad Young be next.   The trade for Payne is weird.  Flip and Izzo are buddies tho.

The thing is, if Minny does improve enough such that we get their pick next year, it will automatically be bumped to 2018.

I think it will be lottery protected 2017-2019, and 2 2nds in 2019-2020 if it didn't convey.

Yeah Bennet's sucked. Shooting slight better but otherwise he's the same player as he was in Cleveland, which is D-league quality.
