Have to wonder how stupid this kid is.  There's no way he doesn't see the payday ahead of him if he just keeps his nose clean.  Anyone that stupid doesn't deserve any sympathy.  I truly think kids kicked off a college program for substance abuse have to agree to 1 year of random testing before they can be eligible for the draft.  Delay that payday and I think you'll see a real drop in these cases

If all teams had the same rules, maybe.  But different conferences have different rules about drug use and testing, and most conferences even delegate it to the schools to decide on the details.  All that would do is funnel kids to the more enabling programs, and/or cause stricter programs to relax their rules somewhat.  Furthermore, since many schools are state run, the decisions on punishment might be in the hands of a wide swath of elected officials.

Not to mention, the NBA's marijuana testing program is pretty forgiving (no suspension until failed test number three) that such stringent punishment just would not make sense.

As a precursor to the 2015 NBA draft, exiled University of Washington 7-footer Robert Upshaw is seriously considering a leap to the NBA Development League, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Washington Huskies coach Lorenzo Romar dismissed Upshaw on Monday, which could give the oft-troubled junior the ability to enter into the D-League’s pool of players and be selected by a team to play the rest of the season.

This could be a way for Upshaw to improve his standing and stock with NBA teams before entering the June NBA draft.

After his dismissal from Washington, Upshaw’s inner-circle has begun the agent selection process, sources told Yahoo Sports.

The NBA does not allow players enrolled at the beginning of a school year to make the immediate move into the D-League unless there’s corroboration that the NCAA or university has declared them ineligible. The D-League has yet to gather information on Upshaw’s case, sources said, but the path of P.J. Hairston – who was declared ineligible at North Carolina in December 2013 – gives Upshaw hope that his case will be seen in a similar way.

Upshaw, 21, is rated as the NBA’s No. 20 prospect on Draft Express.com’s Top 100 list. Upshaw averaged 10.9 points, 8.2 rebounds and an NCAA-leading 4.4 blocks in 24.9 minutes a game for Washington. Upshaw started his career at Fresno State.

Upshaw has previously failed drug tests in college and spent part of his freshman summer in John Lucas’ Houston-based treatment program.

Yep. No thanks. If he's doing dumb stuff now when he's not making money, imagine when he's actually making it. Sounds like Larry Sanders 2.0.

I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

I just read this and it depends as was mentioned above depends what it is folks.

http://www.nytimes.com/1997/10/26/sports/marijuana-and-pro-basketball-a-special-report-nba-s-uncontrolled-substance.html

Sure it would be tested in the NCAA but in the NBA if it was pot then 60-70% of the league does it.  One of our guys sure looks like he gets the munchies now.

NBA does test for pot, you just don't suffer a suspension until the third offense, IIRC

Well DX still has him listed at 20 the d league stint is going to make teams really consider what kind of talent at the 5 in their pipeline. I could see a team like Portland or the Mavs giving Upshaws a look. 4.4 blocks is impressive at any level. We'll see what he can do in the d league.
