Getting to the rim is really important for a PG. But so is the ability to hit 3 point shots. I haven't seen anything out of payton that'd make me jump for him over Smart, though he's shown plenty of promise too.

Tell that to Tony Parker.....

Russel Westbrook shoots 30% from deep,

Payton can up it more than 24% if he shoots it more, he just doesnt.

But the thing about todays NBA is that I think its important to be able to shoot the 3 , and make at least 1 or 2 on occassion.
I'm not sure you read my post in a way other than looking for an argument. You don't have to possess every useful skill in basketball to be a good or even great player.

PGs need to be able to either penetrate and score/create or shoot the 3 to be offensively viable. Great offensive PGs need to do both truthfully. The PGs you name who are shaky as floor spacers make up for it with penetration and attacking the paint.

And as for the "he can up it if he tries and takes more", well that line of thought never worked for Rondo or Ramon Sessions now has it?
Completely unrelated to the whole Smart/Payton thing, but Rondo is actually shooting 33% on threes this year with Dallas (16/48 in 37 games). It's a shame that he's finally reached respectable shooting-wise yet he's so athletically-diminished that he can no longer slice into the lane.

From Chad Ford yesterday:

George (Virginia)

Is anyone besides Andrew Wiggins getting first place votes for Rookie of the Year this season? I know Noel and Mirotic have been good, but will voters be willing to put them ahead of Wiggins?
Chad Ford  (1:10 PM)

Wiggins has had a good year, Noel has been playing great of late and there are very few NBA All-Stars, let alone rookies, playing better than Nikola Mirotic has in the month of March. He's been awesome. I'd also make a strong case for Elfrid Payton. He's having an epic rookie season despite the fact that his offensive game is still a major work in progress. He's on track to be an elite point guard. If I had to vote today: 1. Mirotic 2. Wiggins 3. Payton 4. Noel

I hate to admit it but Payton has been averaging 14/7/7 over his last 15 games or so. Boston picked the wrong guard. Another blown draft.

Clearly, case closed then.   ::)

If Peyton was on this team right now, he would be getting the same Rondo treatment we saw for years on these boards because of the shooting woes.   Absolutely no doubt.

Ppl on this forum are so reactionary. Payton has a good run and it's ''this draft was a bust''. Thomas gets a bruised back and it's all caps, 'trade him before its too late!!'. Ppl were calling for Stevens to be fired - then we went on a win streak and ppl were talking about coach of the year. At some point next season Smart will have a couple good games and ppl will be comparing him to dwade again. Meanwhile some level-headed folks are saying, look at the stats--these guys both had pretty good rookie seasons, and it's unclear who will ultimately be better-- and then they get trashed, 'stats don't mean anything if they don't support my opinion!!!'

It's just good that C's trade and draft moves aren't determined by CB polls.

completely agree - Smart has had a good rookie season, not a great one, not an awful one.  He has been good.  The last 25 games he is averaging 9/4/3 and the team is 15-10.  I think he shoots better than we thought and he doesn't attack as much as we have hoped.  His defense has been awesome, nobody can deny that.  I for one, am happy the C's took him because I think he has a bright future in this league.  I expect him to make a huge jump next season....

Worth mentioning that the bolded sentence did not come from the basketball genius mind of Chad Ford.

Please, if Smart was putting up numbers and his team was 3-19 in the last 22 you would be saying hes the lone bright spot...

Like I said throw all the stats away if you want , Peyton has the tools.

lol, the only thing i'd accept in a trade at this point for smart is either davis or Durant.

Smart is a Celtic, one of those that will be underappreciated by the fans his entire career apparently.

smart and payton still have a ways to go. C's fans losing it over payton are being narrow-minded and not looking at the big picture. payton very well could be peaking and smart could still be climbing. either way their futures aren't written, appreciate the players you have.

You wouldnt trade him for Wiggins.............your the only Celtic fan with that mindset.

Of course im still thinking you were joking.

no, I wasn't joking. I see things in Smart that I don't want to give up. now if you want to base everything on numbers? then great, but I see Smart as one of those players where his numbers might not jump out at you every night but his contributions directly lead to wins. when it comes to style over substance i'm choosing the latter every time.

I can't believe there are people around here that don't see the potential in Smart.

Sure as if Payton is even the best player on that team to be lone bright spot, lol. Smart doesn't have the level of players (talent) or even the consistency that Peyton has had. Nor does Smart get the free reins to run pick and roll half the game. Peyton is MCW get over him.

i havent heard any of yall mention Smart's defense once. Defense is way too undervalued in today's game. Statistics is obviously something that coaches are too worried about. Coaches are more focused on analytics and stretching the floor in todays revolutionized game. Something that Payton is not capable of doing
