Im sure the 1st we get from memphis is probably two 2nds as well

What is this, a reverse jinx? You seem really hung up on the idea of Green not getting us a 1st. ;D
Nerf, how do we get a 1st from them if they already have a heavily protected 1st going to Denver.

Someone figure this out...

Quote
2015 first round draft pick to Denver
Memphis' 1st round pick to Denver (via Cleveland) protected for selections 1-5 and 15-30 in 2015, 1-5 and 15-30 in 2016, 1-5 in 2017 and 1-5 in 2018 and unprotected in 2019 [Cleveland-Memphis, 1/22/2013; Cleveland-Denver, 1/7/2015]

So how could they send us a 1st?  It's would have to be some weird protection... something like this?

2015 Draft.  1-5 = Memphis keeps it, 6-14 = Goes to Denver, 15-30 = goes to Boston

Then depending on what happens it will have to roll over into 2016... so if it goes to Denver this year and maybe the rest of the protection they had given to Denver goes to us:  Protected 1-5 and 15-30 in 2016, 1-5 in 2017 and 1-5 in 2018 and unprotected in 2019

Does that make sense to anyone else or am I crazy?

I was wondering about those pick protections too. Stepien Rule might delay payment to BOS of a 1st from MEM, no?

While I really don't have a firm grasp concerning the rules dealing with draft picks, can't they just agree to giving us their 1st two years after they compensate Denver?

Well the way that pick is protected right now:

2015 Draft:  1-5 = Memphis Keeps it.  6-14 = Denver gets it.  15-30 = Memphis keeps it.
... if Denver didn't get a pick it rolls over into this
2016 Draft:  1-5 = Memphis Keeps it.  6-14 = Denver gets it.  15-30 = Memphis keeps it.
... if Denver still didn't get a pick it rolls over into this
2017 Draft:  1-5 = Memphis Keeps it... otherwise Denver gets it
... if Denver still didn't get a pick it rolls over into this
2018 Draft:  1-5 = Memphis Keeps it... Otherwise Denver gets it
... if Denver still didn't get a pick it rolls over into this
2019 Draft:  Denver gets it

So it seems to me they could say... Ok... if the pick falls between 15-30 this year, Boston can get it.   If the pick goes to Denver this year, we just roll over the same protections from 2017-2019 that we had agreed for Denver.

Then they would end up keeping their 2016 pick...

Wait but if MEM does finish as a top 3 seed, they most likely will be picking around after 15 correct? Is it ours this year, or does DEN get first dibs, or that only applies if its 6-14?

except the complications introduced by trading consecutive  picks, which logically prevent them from forming secondary conditions on these picks already (since we do not know how next years pick will turn out).

Memphis would have to make the pick Top 14 protected. It's already Protected for picks 1-5 & 15-30 this yr, picks 15-30 next season, picks 1-5 in 2017-2018, & unprotected in 2019. This means Denver only gets the pick in 2015 if it falls between 6 & 14 (won't happen).

All the Grizzlies have to do is reverse the protection on the pick. For example they could offer us: 2015 1st (Top 14 protected this year & next yr, becomes 2 future second Rd picks in 2017. We have to get the pick before 2018 because Denver's pick is guaranteed in 2019 and Memphis can't trade two consecutive picks. We're likely getting a 2015, 2016, or 2017 pick.

Well if you are correct than as you say we will get their pick this year because they will without question be between 15-30 this year.

I realized that's not possible, because it would mean we get their pick this year and Denver could get their pick next year... and since you can't trade picks back-to-back years, it rules it out

SO what this mean is... the pick we are getting we probably will not see until after 2019.

I think you're looking at something like the protection the Lakers have on their future picks.

They owe Phoenix a pick: L.A. Lakers' 1st round pick to Phoenix protected for selections 1-5 in 2015, 1-3 in 2016 and 1-3 in 2017 and unprotected in 2018

They owe Orlando a pick: If at least two years after the L.A. Lakers conveyed a 1st round pick to Phoenix, then the L.A. Lakers' 1st round pick to Orlando protected for selections 1-5 in 2017 and 1-5 in 2018 and unprotected in 2019; if the L.A. Lakers have not conveyed a 1st round pick to Phoenix by 2017, then the L.A. Lakers will instead convey their 2017 2nd round pick and 2018 2nd round pick to Orlando

So, I could easily see a protection scenario such as two years after Memphis conveys a first round pick to Denver, the Grizzlies' 1st round pick goes to Boston, protected for 1-5 and 15-30 for 2017 and 2018, protected for 1-5 in 2019 and 2020, and unprotected in 2021.
