Tanking is probably more of a science than an art.

First Tanking is illegal and immoral so you cannot tell your players to go out and lose games. That is an absolute no no.

How then do you get to a point where you are so bad you cant win games even when you try.

1. Get rid of all your good players -- this is not as easy as it seems because NBA players are mostly good and you sill play five on five, and the players play for pride and their own egos. So as long as you are fielding healthy players there is always a chance for the upset.

2. Get a coach that does not understand the NBA. Now this is where you are really committing to tanking. The coach as a lot of influence on the game and if your coach is committed to the tank that will go a long way into the success of the effort.

So it looks like the best way to tank is through inept coaching. With inept coaching you get to keep a nice team and lose at the same time. When the tank is complete you can upgrade the coaching staff and not have to rebuild a depleted team.
