I think the notion of trading Rondo was viewed as a possibility as soon as the Nets deal went down.  I think Ainge started trending towards trading Rondo once he drafted Smart.  I think the actual decision of going through with moving Rondo was made this week after Ainge took the team's start into consideration in conjunction with Rondo's impending free agency.

I think Rondo didn't fit into Stevens ball movement offense and Stevens knew it. Rondo wants the ball, for better or worst, in his hands most of the time.

I think Stevens would have adjusted if we landed Love.  But when we lost Love, it was bye bye Rondo.

Smart was the protection back up plan.

From the 2nd ot loss game vs the Wizards

+1 Guys at my job were calling it over for Rondo after that game. It showed the difference between the two more than any other game. No way Rondo could defend Wall and then be as clutch scoring like Smart. 23/4/5/2 with just 0 turn overs for a plus 13. Wall had 9 TOs. Watch end of game Wall looks at Smart walking away and if you watch boxing you can tell the look he has. It is the one in which the champion knows he won the fight by rounds but he took the most punishment.

Recently, I think. Probably sometime after the first 10-15 games were played.
