Thought we could take a break from Rondochat to answer this very controversial question ESPN had on their NBA page today.

The poll's obviously a joke (please do vote though), but I was interested in hearing who everyone thinks would be #1.  I have a couple in mind (one in green) but I'll hold off and see what gets said.

I voted for all options just because I could.

  • I'm a Paul Heyman guy.
ESPN must have forgotten Isaiah Thomas and Joe Dumars.

That is the optimal response I think.  Who's your #1 koz?  It's harder than I expected, a lot of the transcendent guards didn't play with other great guards.

Maybe Offensively. Defensively, far from it

By the way, the current distribution (with a strongly dominant middle option) seems telling of something... not sure what, though.

As for the other stuff... Payton and Kendal Gill were pretty good for a couple of years. But so were Stockton and Jeff Malone. Ainge and DJ in Ainge's all-star year? (by the way, Ainge, DJ, and Bird averaged almost 21 assists between the three of them that season. Eye-popping.)

I thought of Stockton, but with Hornacek instead.  Hornacek wasn't really at his peak then I think though.

The ones that came to mind were Magic+Michael Cooper, and Sam Jones + Havlicek.  But I'm sure there's at least one obvious one I'm missing.

I'd add Jerry West + Gail Goodrich to list of duos above.

I mostly remember Hornacek as a one-dimensional shooter, but admittedly these are just memories from his Utah time when he was way past his prime. I don't claim in-depth knoweldge from before the mid-90s, though, so take my picks with a grain of salt :)

Yeah, this is one of the obvious ones I missed, thanks.

Don't think Oscar ever played with a great guard.  Positive Jordan didn't.  Kobe played with Payton one season but that doesn't really count since Payton was well off his prime.

Tom Van Arnsdale and/or Norm Van Lier?

I wouldn't know though, that was way before my time.

Did you just say Bob Cousy wasn't a great guard?  On a Celtics forum?  ???

Haha, is that Cousy's notorious 6 games at 46 season?  Or whatever the exact numbers are.  If so, nice!  I stand corrected.
