Sure their interest is their scrubs Wright, Freeland and Robinson for Wallace plus Philly 1st. Helps C's free up more cap next year. Blazers get a vet that is a team player and likely two very high second round picks. Still don't think it happens.

No way on God's green earth that Portland gives up their most important bench player in Kaman for Gerald Wallace.

Where's this rumor from? Somewhere on this blog?

You complicated things too much with that trade. Too many moving parts.

Much simpler:

http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=nmayhk9

Boston
Robinson
Freeland

Portland
Wallace
16 2nd rd pick (Miami)

*Also gives us a trade exception of a little over 3M.

The title of this thread should be under consideration as "Cruelest joke played on Celticsblog readers of the year."

Quote
Don't be surprised if a team such as the Portland Trail Blazers tries to make a bid for Celtics swingman Gerald Wallace and offers some unwanted expiring contracts for Boston's troubles. Wallace, 32, played parts of two seasons with Portland and enjoyed his stint there. He was seen joking during the Celtics-Blazers game with Portland All-Star forward LaMarcus Aldridge. The closer Wallace's anchor-like contract nears conclusion, the easier it will be to move. Wallace is attractive to a club seeking a veteran leader who can defend in spot minutes.

That's not a rumor.

That's a sportswriter trying to fill out a column by thinking out loud.

I think the reporter was just guessing (one might say badly) based on Wallace's good relationship with the Portland organization.

However, I just don't see it. Aldridge, Lopez, and Matthews are due contracts extensions next year and let's conservatively put their total contract worth at 40 million. Those expiring deals are necessary to lessen the cap hit when all 3 get raises. I understand the need to have guys on deals already since you're limited in signing FAs once you're over the cap, but I'd think they could do better than Gerald Wallace.

What if somebody makes a bigger than expected offer to Lopez or Matthews? Not having Wallace on the roster would make it easier for them to match.

This. There's not a single player in the league with lower trade value than Wallace.

It's all situational and it depends on what the team is really looking for. But if it's strictly for on court talent then yeah you're probably right.

I would rank them 1) Wallace, 2) Gallinari, 3) Eric Gordon, 4) Javale McGee 5) Joe Johnson. Wallace is last because he's not even playing. Not really sure who is 6th worst though. George Hill at 3 yrs/24 million is a contender. After that there are a lot of mediocre guys making 5-6 million a year so it's hard to say their contracts are "horrible" due to the low AAV.

I will say that Faried is looking bad after his big extension and that could be a future candidate. Varejao at age 32 is signed until 2018 at 10/year but at least for now he's healthy and contributing. It's not like they have a lot of other options since they're over the cap so I can understand that deal though.

I'd do this trade sending the Cleveland pick to Orlando:

http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=lqelh5u

to Boston: Thomas Robinson, Dorell Wright
to Portland: Gerald Wallace, Phil Pressey, Dewayne Dedmon
to Orlando: Joel Freeland, Cleveland's pick

why for Orlando: third string C for third string C, getting a late first rounder is worth it

why for Portland: if they really want Wallace, they get a third string PG and a bigger third string C in Dedmon, who is a better insurance for Kaman than Freeland

why for Boston: save money now, get Wallace off the books and get a reclamation project in Robinson. Dorell Wright is another expiring.

Still an unbalanced roster, but a lot of options next February, with Bass+Thornton+Wright adding up to 18M in expirings:

Rondo/Turner/Smart
Bradley/Thornton/Young
Green/Wright/Powell
Sully/Bass/Robinson
Zeller/Olynyk/Faverani

Send Robinson and Powell down to the DLeague and play the season out until the trade deadline.

Well, they are the team that gave him that massive deal in the first place, I guess.
At least a goldfish with a Lincoln Log on its back goin' across your floor to your sock drawer has a miraculous connotation to it.
