This is actually a pretty good post.

I am not sure that I see Melo as Phil Jackson's "guy" and to be honest, I was kinda surprised they offered Melo the deal that they did.

Anyway, I don't see Melo lasting his whole contract in New York.

I really don't.

I also wouldn't be surprised if next summer, the Knicks do put Melo on the trade market or if Melo requests a trade.

UNLESS….Phil pulls off something crazy like trading for Kobe.

And even then, I am not sure Kobe and Melo would work in New York.

With this fire-sale scenario; I'd be looking to keep 2 of our 3 young guns and find a third team to facilitate.

Here's my offer:

New York receives:
   Marc Gasol  (15M expiring)
   Brandon Bass (7M expiring)
   LAC 2015 1st
   BOS 2015 1st

Memphis receives:
   Jeff Green
   Kelly Olynyk
   Jose Calderon

Boston receives:
   Melo

Then I think you have to make another move for a rim protector.  I'd target Al Horford for a package of Wallace & Smart.

end result:

Rondo \ Turner
Bradley \ Young
Melo
Sullinger
Horford \ Zeller

If ATL is willing to take Bradley instead, I would gamble to trade Bradley away and keep Smart

Problem with getting Melo is we'd still have the same problems.  No rim protector.   Scoring has not been a problem for us thus far which is what he brings to the table.   We'd still have porous defense and Melo is not a leader in that regard.

He is fools gold for this team.   Now if we had a defensive big man, one might think about it.   Right, now I think he would add more problems than he would fix.

Scoring is a problem in the 4th.. And can you imagine how many open looks Melo would get in Stevens system... Also don't tell me Melo doesn't pass, cause he does.. His teammates just sucked something awful last year. Shumpert wasn't confident at all and Smith has a even worse shot selection. Ball movement us the bread and butter. Want to double Melo? Ok, AB or KO is open. Melo did well last year. The Knicks just really stunk last year, and none of that is on Melo.

Carmelo is a bonafide closer. All you need is Melo, a good rebounder at PF, and a rim protector along with a decent 3 and D type of SG.

My left nut.
I think that would be enough to get it done.  I am not including my right nut unless we get a draft pick in return too.
Before a game on Christmas against the Pacers, Bird told Chuck Person that he had a present for him. During the game, Bird shot a 3-pointer in front of Person. Immediately after releasing the ball, Bird said to Person, "Merry F!#*ing Christmas!" and then the shot went in.

ATL probably hangs up unless we're sending picks as well.  I don't get the feeling AB carries much value around the league.

I'd be surprised if AB weren't considered a valuable piece in a trade scenario.   24 yo guy who shoots at a high percentage and averages 15 ppg.  Rebounds pretty well for a guard. And he's improved offensively every year.

Despite the observations here of a guy who's gone downhill defensively, I think he's still got a good reputation league-wide as a defender.  And he's on the hook at fair dollars for 4 years.     Not saying you catch a big fish with Bradley alone, but I think he has value as an add-on.

Would Phil Jackson ever rebuild??  He doesnt know how to do it.  He'd just retire again until he had a chance to coach or run a team with the best player or players in basketball again

Rebuilding with young players is uncharted territory for him.

Offense isn't our main problem, defense is.  That said, we sure could've used a closer like Melo against Cleveland.

Jeff Green, Avery Bradley, Kelly Olynyk and as many draft picks as it takes
