god-awful deal for the C's for a number of reasons.  talent-wise, C's-get-worse, LA-gets-better, Kobe-happier,

I disagree. Even if they trade for him right now, they would marginally improve but still won't have enough to make the playoffs in the west. You could even argue that acquiring him now would endanger their chances of keeping their 1st rounder since they only get to keep it if it's top 5. LA loves headlines, but they're also smart enough to understand they're not that good right now and need a lot work to get back into playoff contention. They'd be better served using their assets to try and acquire a big like Al Horford and then try to add Rondo in FA.

What is there to disagree with? Beyond the fact that they won't make the playoffs, the best opportunity that they have to land Rondo is in trade, not free agency.

According to...?

I'm not saying Rondo will opt for LA but it's naive to think they have to trade for him to get him. It wasn't that long ago that Dwight Howard refused a trade to Houston, they went ahead and traded for Harden, and then Howard signed with them in the off season. It's not unthinkable that LA would roll the dice and try to use assets to acquire a player locked into a longer term deal and make themselves more attractive to Rondo in free agency.

According to the CBA, for one thing. Rondo's impending free agency has a lot more in common with Carmelo's situation last year than it does with Dwight circa June 2012.

Same CBA.

And I think Rondo coming off of an injury with people questioning his attitude - kind of like Dwight was when he bolted LA - has no intention to committing to any team longterm even if he's traded. And with the Carmelo situation, even though he tested the waters, everyone knew it was NY - that's his hometown team, he forced the trade there, that's where his wife wants to be (she said as much before FA even began), and they could top if off with more money. There's not a ton of similarity there with him and Rondo at all.

... are you intentionally misreading what I post?

You're asking why the Lakers have the best opportunity to get Rondo in trade -- ignoring the significant amount of money that would be given to him via his Bird Rights -- and then saying that it's not like Carmelo at all because the Knicks had his Bird Rights and could give him a ton more money.

I think you're misreading what I post. I said there were other factors in addition to having Carmelo's bird rights. I also said bird rights aren't the end all be all for impending FA's. Given the fact that they traded assets to get Howard and he walked, they may just wait until the offseason. Sure, they can trade for Rondo now but if they don't, I don't subscribe to the theory that it's the only way they can get him.  If they can use their assets to get another notable player like an Al Horford, they stand just as good a chance of wooing him away. If you're Rondo and LA's offering Kobe + Horford or Hibbert at a year less and Boston's offering 5 years + the likes of Olynyk + Evan Turner, I'd say advantage LA.

Aha, got you. Post clarified, and given the Horford hypothetical, I'd agree.

Based on their roster as it stands, though, I don't think Rondo loses money on his deal to sign there.

Lin and Nash's expiring $25 million contracts plus Young (5 million) and Ed Davis (@1 million) for Rondo (@13 million), GWall (@10 million), and Thornton (@8.7 million), and an LA first rounder.

I love Ed Davis as a rotation big.  Young can score.  We get a first.  We get rid of Gerald's albatross contract.

Thoughts?

I don't think this can be done until December 15th.

Not a fan of this deal.

Losing Wallace's contract is only worth something if his cap space is needed. A deal that trades Rondo puts this team into a full on youth movement where cap space is less valuable. Lin and Nash's expiring are also of little value for this reason. Nick Young is already 29 and is not a player to build around. Davis is 25 and has decent value but just signed a 2 yr 2mill $ deal, if the Cs wanted him bad enough to trade Rondo they could have just signed him. The first is nice but they only have a first this season if its top 5 so it would be a future first.

o hell no, I don't want Rondo ANYWHERE near gold and purple...him, KG and Pierce are the three players I want far away from LA land. To me, that's equivalent to Brady taking his talents to places like the Giants, or the Colts...if Rondo leaves for lala land as a FA, he might as hire body guards to escort him out of Boston

Here's how you get him: wait until offseason, sign as free agent.

Would only trade him to LAL in a package where we would net a true center (let them find one for us), Randle and 2 first round picks.

Except top free agents do no want to sign to play with Kobe.

Which of course back to the beginning which why do we care who this years rumored FA to be going the LA this year?

Last year was Lebron, Melo, Bosh, George....

How did that work out for the Lakers?
