The Grizz are walking proof of defying the concept of 'tanking is the only approach' way to go. Conley's their only key player who was a top pick that they took.
Err, they did tank, though - they also drafted Mayo (well, technically Love, who they traded for Mayo) and Thabeet with top picks. They didn't keep those guys, but I don't know if you can say they really defied the concept of tanking.
Unless, of course, you're challenging the notion that the
only way to build a team is through the draft. In which case, I get your point.
