In talking about Sullinger's performance vs. the Nets, Coach Stevens had this to say:

Quote
Our 4s and 5s do the exact same thing in our offense, so they are interchangeable. So it doesn't matter, you can learn both just by knowing one.

Note that he says they do the exact same thing on offense, not defense, so the two positions aren't necessarily identical.

I guess this means Stevens wants to find the ultimate stretch-five.

Other than unless when Zeller is on the floor (or Faverani), for all intents and purposes he'll be playing the de facto five with whomever else is on the floor with him, including Olynyk.

It doesn't really matter that much on the offense end - but we need someone who can play the 5, legitimately, on D.

4s and 5s have always been interchangeable in the Celtics offense because all of our 5s have actually been 4s since Perk got traded.

Sully started off guarding Plumlee last night, while Kelly was guarding Mirza Teletovic.

I can't find the interview, but Ainge said basically the same thing - that 4's and 5's are interchangeable in today's NBA.  This was a few years ago back when Doc was still our coach and the Big 3 was still intact.

Actual (i.e. non-stretch) 4s and 5s are largely interchangeable in the modern NBA, so it makes sense.

Interesting, thanks. I didn't have access to the game, saw Plumlee going off at 3-3 early, and thought KO's defense might be to blame.

How many true NBA centers are there anymore? The definition of the position  has totally changed from what it used to be. We look at a guy like Dwight Howard, the best Center in the league... and he'd probably be playing PF in the late 90s because he has absolutely no post moves, not to mention that he's the same size and build as Karl Malone. That's what the league's best C looks like now. The whole point is that if you use the model of the Spurs and Heatles from the last 3 years, the 4 is a spread player and the 5 can be undersized without being any liability. Since the top 3 bigmen on the Celtics are all spread and undersized, why wouldnt they be interchangeable.

Translation....

We are going to continue to get killed in the paint until we find a legitimate big man.
