Before the season starts I am sure the Celtic's Brass will have a discussion on what type of scenarios would have to play out in order for them to trade RR. Lets say one of those scenarios would be the breakout play of Marcus Smart.

Question:
What does Marcus Smart need to do ,on and off the court, for you to acknowledge that its probably best that he becomes our starting point guard....
Also remember that Rondo will become an UFA, chances are he will not want to resign with a club that has the next up and coming pg and is in rebuilding mode.
Edit:Although Smart can play sg next to Rondo it is apparent that he would be more effective st the point.

Fail at playing alongside Rondo as a SG?

Start spiking his drinks with some type of strength-reducing elixir.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

-Team chemistry is biggest thing for me. As in can he help other guys be better.

-Keep turn overs down.

-Keep his emotion/attitude positive both on and off court.

-Be above 42% shooting

-Stay out of foul trouble or learn how to play tone down defense with fouls.

-Stay focused on wins not stats

-Know and execute the system and philosophy of the team.

-Be willing and decent at stepping up hitting the big shot or free throw.

-Show monthly progress.

-Think about what you are about to say always before you say it.

-Embrace the rival fans as fans doing their best to support their team. As in have class with a tiny bit of showmanship on the road.

It's a lot but it's what I expect of a guy replacing an all-star.

These are some good things. So far Marcus looks like a great person and human being. I also believe there is a leader in him and he will lead by example.....with ultra handwork, defense, and intensity.

I'm not worried about Marcus Smart.  Rondo should be worried about MS.  If Rondo can't help the team win or keep it close game after game (playing a ton of min and pounding the ball) , he gets injured a little , needs some rest or unexpectedly misses a game and we start winning with smart, then Rondo will be on his way out.

I see you added this little caveat after I'd posted my response.

I think my point still stands: a Rondo-Smart backcourt must be proven a failure before Rondo is viewed as expendable. There's plenty of minutes to go around between Rondo, Smart, and Bradley, and the various permutations possible all have their own strengths.

Some folks want Rondo to fail. I don't.

Be less good than Phil Pressey, so that the Celtics are not very improved from last year and Rondo is traded before he leaves in free agency.

In case this is unclear:  the better Smart plays, the more likely Rondo is to stay.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

Fail at playing alongside Rondo as a SG?
this while tongue in cheek makes the most sense to me
smart as of now is not a nba point guard ready guy
can he give quality minutes at sg/pg in that order…probably
is his shot as good as bradleys no
can he run a team as well as rondo
NO  :o
so if smart stinks up the place and can't make it alongside rondo then there is a chance CHANCE that rondo is moved for a big or future and smart is given pg duties to learn on the curve as we are going to be even more lackluster than last season

  • A true Celtic plays with heart.
I don't get it..

If Smart proves to be good enough to replace Rondo, why would we trade either players? Wouldn't that want to bring in some disgruntled Allstars who would love to join a duo of Smart/Rondo? Plenty of minutes can be given to both players, and Smart has shown that he can play extremely well off ball. He doesn't always need the ball in his hands, and in an USA interview where he was playing with future possible superstars in Payton, Okafor, Gordon, Randle, etc. He said that his main job is to give it his all, on both sides of the court.

I believe Smart will definitely surpass some expectations, but I see that as a plus. That would probably pique Rondo's interest, and Rondo is probably gonna do his best to try to reach out to some players, and hold up a sign, "hey, godly defensive trio in Bradley, Smart, and Rondo. Just looking for a scorer, and a big man. Please contact Danny Ainge at this following number to sign up."
