I wonder how people feel about All in the Family. I am somewhat familiar with it. Mixed feelings
best years were before the Jeffersons moved on to their own show. still pretty good until Edith was gone and it became Archie Bunker's Place. then it was pretty bad.
I agree with the analysis that it went way downhill after Edith. Went downhill a bit after Mike and Gloria left the house. But overall, the show was brilliant.
What was great is that while it made bigotry out to be buffoonery, it also often simultaneously made sport of Mike's ultra-liberal views. In the big picture, though, I think it presented a forum for ways of thinking that were (are) really embedded in our culture and allowed for some comical/real 'debate' about important issues. It took on racism, homosexuality/homophobia, sexism, chauvanism, sexuality in general, liberty, and other important social issues -- and it did so cleverly and thoughtfully.
This show is an important component of the social evolution in America in the 20th century . I think it confused the question of whether art was immitating life or life was immitating art. I don't mean to overstate its impact, but I think the show really did have a role in shaping American society.
