76ers get: Hasheem Thabeet (will be waived immediately), cash

Thunder get: Protected 2015 2nd rounder, $1.25M TPE

This gives the Thunder some cap and roster flexibility before Thabeet's contract becomes guaranteed in a few days. The 76ers will waive Thabeet immediately, so he will not count against their cap. The Thunder are unlikely to ever get that 2nd rounder.

I think Thabeet has a place in the league. I hope someone else signs him.

How is this a tanking move?  They got free cash for a guy the Thunder were going to cut.

How about we sign him. The minimum wouldnt hurt us, no? We can use every big body we have.

No need for Thabeet with Faverani and J.Anthony already here. Celtics have enough below average backup centers / 3rd string centers already. No point in stacking up on end of roster players who provide minimal enhancement to team.

Maybe next year though. When Joel Anthony's contract expires. Thabeet could be a good target then. Well, if Faverani fails to put things together. Acquire a new starting center elsewhere, keep Tyler Zeller as the backup center and then sign Thabeet as a third string center. Thabeet would provide good contrast to Zeller with his size (7-3, 270lbs, length, athleticism) and strong shot-blocking. Good option as third stringer.

Renting out cap space is a total tanking move.

I think Thabeet is better than Fav or Anthony though.

I'd take Faverani over Thabeet.

Yeah but the difference is so small it is not worth the money (to waive someone + pay Thabeet).

I'd take Faverani over Thabeet.

I don't want to give up on Faverani yet either. With a little work, Faverani could be a good player.

I'd take Thabeet over J.Anthony though.

This isn't equitable to the Mbah a Moute/Shved salary dumps, where the Sixers are taking on guys they aren't remotely interested in just because they get a first rounder for it.  The Thunder were going to cut Thabeet; instead they put him on the Sixers' books, so they could cut him as they have immense amounts of cap space.  This isn't a tanking move; it's not like Philly is actively going to play Thabeet.  He's gone, either because the Thunder were going to waive him or because the Sixers were.

Any team with cap space could've facilitated this trade, whether tanking or contending.  Acquiring Byron Mullens last year was a tanking move; this is just making easy cash for literally nothing more than a highly protected second rounder that they'll never have to convey.

His rookie year he only played 13mpg but still averaged 1.3 blocks.....thats elite. Since then he has never actually averaged more than 1 bock a game for a season.
