Thought I'd pass this along considering how much attention Rivers has gotten in the past on these forums but it appears that Austin Rivers has been waived by the Pelicans. I've tried finding a Woj tweet, something from Chris Sheridan, anybody but a cryptic message on Rivers' instagram page detailing: "New chapter for me.....not worried about what's happened. I can a only control what I do next. And with the way I'm working right now, I like how the future looks! Hard work & God = .....anything possible" led me to start searching for an article, search the New Orleans Pelicans twitter account, etc.

No official report but it appears what many people on these boards has longed assumed to happen has finally happened. Undoubtedly he'll be picked up by someone looking to give him a shot for cheap this fall.

that post might have nothing to do with basketball.

You're absolutely right. For all we know it's an account of his decision to shop at Target over Walmart. And I'm being one hundred percent serious, not trying to be sarcastic. I know it could be about anything but that's why I'm labeling it a rumor but given the talk of him being waived in order to accommodate Asik (which ended up not being necessary, at least not immediately it appears) I can only assume this relates.

I can't find it by I distinctly remember a reporter saying that they might waive Rivers to make room for Asik. However, I thought New Orleans used the non guaranteed contract of Melvin Ely to make the deal work financially.

In any event if Rivers is waived I would like to see him brought to Boston. Yes we already have a lot of guards, but if we can get him for cheap it's never a bad idea to acquire talent.

If we didn't already have a ton of guards I'd say give Austin a shot - he's not nearly as good as his HS/college hype, but probably not as bad as he looked in New Orleans either.  Hope he finds himself a better situation.

Tend to agree. The only reason he was drafted so highly, to my eye, was the pedigree.

He was the number 1 prospect out of HS when he went to Duke. He obviously has under-performed a lot since, lost a lot of confidence, but too young to give up on.  If the price is right, I would try to sign him.  Seems like a great kid too.

Scared she'll wind up in the NBA?

Gotta love the high elevation of gender discourse here.

Maybe he just thought duck face and duck boats would be a good match.

I think it will be costly for them to trade him rather than just dump him for picks/TE

From CBA:
"If the player is waived from July 1 to August 31, then his remaining salary is paid over twice the number of years remaining on his contract, plus one. For example, if the player is waived on August 1 with two seasons remaining on his contract at $10.2 million and $10.3 million, respectively, then his remaining salary is paid over five years (two seasons times two, plus one), in even amounts of $4.1 million per year."

If he is released, I wouldn't mind giving him a partially guaranteed contract for a couple years at the minimum to see if a change of scenery helps.  Let him compete with Johnson and Babb for the last roster spot.  If he earns it, good for him.

Rivers could probably use a year or two in the NBDL to replace the years he should've been in college.
