So my understanding is that the 2014-15 salary cap is $63.1 million, the luxury tax line is $76.8 million, and the apron is $80.8 million. The non-taxpayer mid-level exception is $5.3 million.

The Celtics have 17 players on the roster, and here is the situation:

Rajon Rondo  - $12,909,091
Gerald Wallace - $10,105,855
Jeff Green - $9,445,000
Marcus Thorton - $8,575,000
Brandon Bass - $6,900,000
Keith Bogans **- $5,285,817
Joel Anthony - $3,800,000
Vitor Faverani - $2,090,000
Kelly Olynyk - $2,075,760
Tyler Zeller - $1,703, 760
Jared Sullinger - $1,424,520
Chris Johnson **- $915,243
Phil Pressey* - $816,482
Chris Babb ** - $816,482

*becomes guaranteed for the season on July 15, 2014
** becomes guaranteed for the season on January 10, 2015

Assuming Johnson and Babb get cut, only based on the need to come down to 15 roster spots, this brings the number to: $65,131, 285

And even if we waive Pressey before July 15, when his contract becomes guaranteed, we are only down to $64, 314, 803

In any case, we are over the cap. But it seems like we could add a player using the full, non-tax-payer mid-level exception, i.e. Chris Humphries, without hitting the tax line.

Does my math/ understanding of the CBA hold up? What do people think about trying to use the full mid-level now, for a short-term big? Or another FA?

You have left off Avery Bradley's $8 million, as well as the approximately $5 million going to Smart and Young.

That said, if the Celtics release Bogans, which will happen at some point if they don't trade him, they would be able to use the MLE, although using the full amount  would place them into the luxury tax.

As long as you don't take any contracts that are guaranteed for next year I'm game for anything. But next year's cap room currently has very little margin for error.

I think this makes us just shy of 2 million over the luxury tax.  Cutting Babb and Johnson puts us right at the limit.  I think it's going to be real hard to sign someone else unless if we trade someone like Bass for a trade exception.  I could see that happening.

Take two:

The non-taxpayer mid-level exception is $5.3 million.

Marcus Thorton - $8,575,000
Avery Bradley - $8,000,000 approx.
Brandon Bass - $6,900,000
Keith Bogans **- $5,285,817
Joel Anthony - $3,800,000
Marcus Smart - $2,736,100
Vitor Faverani - $2,090,000

Tyler Zeller - $1,703, 760
Jared Sullinger - $1,424,520

Assuming Johnson and Babb get cut, only based on the need to come down to 15 roster spots, this brings the number to: $77, 262, 785

And even if we waive Pressey before July 15, when his contract becomes guaranteed, we are only down to $76,446,303

With a waiver of Bogans we could still sign a full mid-level and stay under the tax line. I had been thinking that we would not cut Bogans as it is a valuable trade chip, but maybe there is a UFA in the current summer batch worthy of such a move, rather than waiting until December (just before the Jan 10 date...)

I think we're going to hold on to Bogans as a trade chip, it seems to be very valuable. To be honest, I just don't see the point in attempting to sign a FA on this current roster if it would hurt our draft pick next year.

I don't.  Bogans will be released by the start of the regular season.  If during this trade season we can't get value for Bogans contract, I don't see that happening once the season has started and trades have slowed down.  Bogans contract becomes guaranteed for the full season as of January 10th, and in-season trading doesn't typically pick up until after that date.
