NBA source: With their $9.8M trade-exception expiring tonight, the Warriors have nothing imminent. But they're still exploring.

This was their primary means of taking Kevin Martin off wolves hands in a salary dump. If they let it go it hurts their K Love trade chances.

Another reason it was good Danny swooped in and made the trade he did with the TPE. If he waited longer, maybe GSW or Denver (also with ~$10M TPE) would have made the trade.
Celtics fan for life.

Fairly certain Denver used most of their TPE on Afflalo.  Fournier's salary certainly wasn't enough to match.

I thought you couldn't combine the TPE with another player in a trade?

GSW would have become a taxpayer making that trade. Much dicier they'd do that.

Depends on what the actual trade was. They could have sent afflalo to the nuggets for a conditional 2nd rounder or something.

It can be structured as Afflalo to Denver using Denver's trade exception, giving Orlando a trade exception.  Orlando uses its new trade exception to acquire Fournier.  You can't combine the TPE with another contract to acquire a player making more than the TPE.

not sure if the TPE was even in the talks with the wolves before

I thought it was always David Lee + fillers + picks with Klay Thompson as a maybe for Love and Martin

not sure if the TPE matters much in that deal cuz the Wolves seems to really want Klay

I think in this case Orlando had cap room, so Orlando would have acquired Fournier with the cap room instead of a TPE, but the mechanic is the same.

Meanwhile, GSW didn't do anything with the $9.8M traded player exception from the Richard Jefferson deal to Utah. Expired at 9 p.m. Pacific.

Feel this is big in the Kevin love sweepstakes. They can't help minny dump unwanted contracts.

At this point, the most likely scenario seems to be LeBron going to the Cavs and Cleveland trading for Kevin Love... so it probably doesn't make a difference.  Also, Boston signing Smart/Young means they can't be included in any deals for a month... so maybe both Boston and Golden State got wind tonight that Bron/Kyrie/Love was on the verge of happening and decided to move on.
