I remember someone telling me Jordan told Ray Allen after their Championship season that "winning one championship is lucky."

Anyone recall this, and if so source?

I googled the topic, and evidently something was said between the two on the subject.

TBH...looking at it in THAT vein, though....I guess Jordan was lucky to have Pippen....Magic was lucky to have Kareem and Worthy...Larry was lucky to have Chief, DJ, Danny and McHale (and Bill)....Duncan had David.

LeBron is lucky to have Bosh and Wade...

...Hakeem was....well, MAYBE Hakeem is under-rated here....he had some good talent around him....but he was such a dominant player....IMO he just "owns" those 2 HOU rings.

I don't think that Michael meant any disrespect to Ray or BOS with the comment, though.

Allegedly it was something Allen said to ESPN after the 2008 Championship.

So, one could contact the worldwide leader and see if they had the footage in a vault somewhere (I'm sure they do).

Jordan was a great player but seems like a jerk but most great people have that side to them.   He was not as good as Bill Russell in terms of rings so he was lucky I guess when you win only six that is the way it is folks.

Jordan got some of the most favorable calls or no calls of all time.  That being said LeBron is ten times worse in that regard.

Thanks for the replies guys! And yeah, I agree this was probably said with a fair degree of hubris, and I know we are on the butt end of the joke, but I think the quote is quite brilliant actually. Especially considering that we would have probably won more rings during that era had it not been for some pretty bad luck...

A stupid quote, so yeah he probably said it.  Maybe he should try getting lucky in Charlotte.

Which reinforces the statement in a whole different direction, I think.

Unfortunately for Ray, I dont think leeching of Lebron, Wade, and Bosh, and winning that 2nd title as a roleplayer is exactly what MJ was talking about.

Oh snap!

It wouldn't be, except then he went and hit the most clutch shot of his life and saved the Heat from certain defeat. He did have about as much of an impact as an auxiliary role-player can have, Robert Horry style.

I kind of remember this.  If Jordan never had Pippen he might have been lucky to win one.

And if Jordan's teams had any competition, he might not have won any!!!

The 80s Cs had the '6ers, Lakers and then the Bad Boys to battle them. They all battled each other.

Who did Jordan have to contend with to win  6?

They beat the old, end of the line Lakers, the Blazers and the Suns!!!! Wow...big deal!

Then the Sonics, Jazz and Jazz?....some real dynastic franchises there, huh?

If Lenny Bias had lived, Jordan may not have won any.

Jordan vs Russ....fugheadaboutit. Magic and Bird over Jordan too.

He didn't have anyone to contend with because he was THAT good. Barkley, Malone, Stockton, Olajuwon (only won when MJ was retired), Ewing, Drexler, Payton, Robinson, Miller, Hardaway, Mullin, Smith didn't win anything because of how good MJ was.

Oh and when Jordan was young, he scored 63 against our Cs, beat the Bad Boy Pistons, albeit after three tries, beat the Lakers, won MVP in 88 while Bird's and Magic's teams were still good, and is the all-time playoff scoring leader in POINTS and POINTS PER GAME (33.5 PPG, #2 is AI with 29.7 PPG, that's a whopping 4-point difference). No one else comes close. http://www.basketball-reference.com/leaders/pts_per_g_career_p.html
