No idea... but let's hope the coin flip doesn't matter and we end up in the Top 3.
in looking at recent drafts the four and five spots have been pretty luck at landing a top 3 pick so there's that

This is a major reason why the NBA has teams stuck in crapville for many years. Yes, coaching, scouting, and player development play a major role, but so does talent, and the NBA, in an effort to discourage tanking, punishes truly awful teams by giving them such poor odds to land the best players in the draft. Oh, and tanking still happens. Way to go. (And I'm not just bitter about 1997 and 2007 for us - the lottery is screwed up, and basically rewards luck). If the lottery stays (which I think shouldn't - just be like EVERY OTHER LEAGUE and let the worst team pick first, etc.), at the very least, the odds need to be upped big-time for the worst teams. 25% odds of landing #1 for the worst team is crazy, and is bad for league development.

Wow crazy, based on that #1 doesn't have the greatest luck getting the number 1 pick
I freakin HATE when I type a message, hit submit... and celticsblog has logged me out.   Why does that happen so often?  So irritating. Second attempt at this...

Just looking at my list... teams who have landed #1 pick

1st best odds - 4 times
2nd best odds - 2 times
3rd best odds - 7 times
4th best odds - 3 times
5th best odds - 5 times
6th best odds - 3 times
7th best odds - 2 times
8th best odds - 1 time
9th best odds - 1 time
10th best odds - 0
11th best odds - 1 time

So I guess you could look at that and say the 1st best odds are due to land the #1 pick.  3rd best odds have gotten really lucky.   But i mean... the odds are what they are.  Whatever.  We'll have a 10% chance at landing the top pick.

Let's see what happens.

2014

Pick 1 - Dun
Pick 2 - Dunn
Pick 3 - Dunnnnn!!!

So yeah... all sorts of suckitude can still happen.  Take a look at 1993...

Imagine we win the coin flip with Utah, are set to have the 4th best odds... and we have a repeat of 1993 lotto results...

#1 pick - 11th best odds = Knicks... goes to Denver. LOLOL
#2 pick - 5th best odds = Utah.  DOH!
#3 pick - 7th best odds = Kings.  UGHHH!!

Rest would shake out like this

#4 pick - Bucks
#5 pick - Philly
#6 pick - Orlando
#7 pick - Celtics
#8 pick - Lakers... well at least there's that.

the odds of that scenario happening is about 2% at most though, according to the odds of the celtics getting the 7th pick.

To answer the OP's question, the best I could find online is that the 4th & 5th ranking will be decided "tomorrow afternoon"

http://bostinno.streetwise.co/2014/04/17/celtics-await-coin-flip-thats-not-really-a-coin-flip/

The quote is at the very bottom of the article.  You'll also note that it is NOT an actual coin flip, but a random drawing.

When looking through the list where the 4 & 5 seeded records drafted vs the 1, you're not at all comparing apples to apples.  If you had bolded EITHER the 4 or 5 compared to the 1 and see how often that lands in the top 3 then that'd be more fair b/c we will have either the 4 or 5.  I'm really glad though that we're vying for the 4/5 instead of the 6/7 like it appeared we would.   ;D

That would stink, and it's obviously possible, but they increased the chances of the teams with the worst records and decreased the chances for the teams with the best records after that lottery.

Especially crappy about this would be the fact that it funnels even more top talent into the Western Conference.

Hopefully all three top picks go to Eastern Conference teams.

Of course, maybe soon they'll abolish conferences for purposes of the playoffs and it won't be such a big deal anyway...we can dream.

Only if the abolish conferences for scheduling too.

If Celts win the Utah flip, I fully intend to celebrate tonight.  That would give Boston about an 80% chance for a top 5 pick, and virtually guarantee a top 6 pick. It also puts the 4th pick in play (Exum).  I would feel very happy about the season and what was accomplished.  Winning the flip for the 17th pick would be icing on the cake.

huge difference between 4 and 5 IMO. Not in terms of Exum or Jabari being better pros long term than say Randle or Vonleh but simply in terms of the value of the pick around the league.

I am hoping Danny can land an All Star via trade thus keeping Rondo here, but I think he needs a top 4 pick to make that happen. There simply IMO is more cache with those top 4 picks. It's been building all season and now it's here because they (the big 4) have all declared.

I am hoping we win that flip....holy cow am I hoping. It could completely change the course of our rebuild.

I get the sense that most folks don't fully understand how important this flip is.  Not just about a few extra ping pong balls.
