Pelicans select Victor Oladipo

Just don't say anything nice about him, or IP will never shut up about it.

  • I'm a Paul Heyman guy.
Word in Phoenix is Eric Bledsoe and Jrue Holiday are playing for the staring other guard spot.

As per multiple sources, they decided that they would determine the starter by whoever is going to beat the other Marvel vs Capcom 3.

SG: Paul George / Aaron McKie / Bradley Beal
SF: Paul Pierce / Tayshaun Prince / Brian Scalabrine

Thoughts on this front court?

C: Pau Gasol
PF: Ryan Anderson
SF: Josh Smith

The knee jerk reaction is, "Smith sucks as a SF".  I don't think that's true, though.  Rather, it's "Smith sucks when he's relied on to provide spacing".

Smith can succeed at SF.  However, he can't succeed when his starting bigs can't play more than 5 feet away from the basket.  If you free up space for him -- like Ryan Anderson will do -- he's still an excellent player.

Good pick by the Pelicans. Oladipo is the rookie of the year, IMO.
PHX Suns: Russell Westbrook, Chris Bosh, Tristan Thompson, Trevor Ariza, Tony Allen, Trey Lyles, Corey Brewer, Larry Nance Jr., Trey Burke, Troy Daniels, Joffrey Lauvergne, Justin Holiday, Mike Muscala, 14.6

Living in Tampa now I watch a lot of Magic basketball. Can't help but be a fan of the kid.

Can someone take my list? While on that note, is there anyone that can take my list everyday at 245p?

I don't like it defensively.

Josh Smith needs to be at PF to impact the game defensively. He can play the wing part time and against certain match ups. But overall he needs to be a 4.

I don't see Anderson being able to cover wings, so while offensively it'll work better than Detroit Smith at SF, I still don't like it.

I agree, Smith's biggest defensive impact is at PF.  Still, I think he's a strong perimeter defender on SFs.

Pau is still a strong defender at center.  Anderson isn't a great perimeter defender, but I think that can be covered for.  Very few teams have big, mobile power forwards to give him trouble.

Except we never drafted Jonny Flynn.  ;D

I guess it's safe to say his name, no?

He's too good to pass. I think we can run a 2 PG system with 3 high caliber PG's taking most of the minutes at the guard spots. Holiday is a capable defender at SG, shoots a solid percentage at the 3 (39%) so he's enough of a threat outside. Which is why he may get the starting nod.

Agreed

Josh Smith is a major post-up threat at the SF position. Very difficult for opponents. If you can create enough spacing to get him down there -- and R.Anderson + P.Gasol certainly can -- then J-Smith can wreck havoc inside. Good scrappy SF. Also a very good scorer in transition and on cuts. Can handle and pass the ball some too.

Strong defensive player + rebounder at the SF position also. Too often J.Smith's perimeter defense gets blamed for the bad defense being played by G.Monroe and A.Drummond. A strong defender on the perimeter although Pau + R.Anderson will have similar problems providing a strong enough interior help defense.

Overall, I like that combination ... although I would probably like it more with a natural SF instead of R.Anderson with J.Smith sliding over to PF to provide more shot-blocking and help defense around the basket. I think a jump-shooting SF with athleticism and quickness would give you better balance.

Scratch that. I'll be able to make my pick today, but is there someone available at this time slot for the future?

Again even so far this round, I'm surprised to see some of the names overlooked (one player in particular).
