Great news for the Celtics if they can convince Cleveland that Green would be better for them then Deng.  Then find a third team to send Deng to getting back that solid player and a 1st.

Any Deng trade will be made a bit more complicated by the fact that the Cavs can trade him by himself, not in combination with any others.

His salary is big enough they're not likely to need to add players. It'll likely be a 2-for-Deng or 3-for-Deng if they do deal him, I'd say.

I know

I am not sure I buy this, but ESPN's trade checker allows the following three team trade.

Wallace and Green to Cavs
Deng to Suns
Okafor to the Celtics.

Throw in the worst of the Suns 1st round picks and who in Boston would be sad?

There we go. Also give Cleveland a first-rounder for their trouble.

What is wrong with just getting Deng? He's the same age as Rondo, and is probably a better building block than Jeff Green. It seems people have developed some sort of "tanking tunnel vision" that makes them roundly ignore that real value is available on the trade market.

No way I would give the Cavs a 1st rounder in that deal.  They get the good contract in Bogans.  The get a SF that keeps their playoff hopes alive and could be there for the long run.  And they get the guy that could develop into a good backup big.

For a guy in his last year that looks to ready to leave.

What about this trade?
To Boston: Gordon + Detroit 2014 first round pick (from Charlotte);
To Cleveland: Green, Bass + Clippers 2015 first round pick (from C's);
To Charlotte: Deng;

I like Deng as a complimentary piece.  (a really good one)

But I think his next deal will be to rich for a rebuilding team.  I don't want to see the Celtics spend near max numbers on guys until they have their core stars in place.

Again, no reason to give the Cavs a first if they are looking to get rid of Deng because either he didn't fit or (more likely) isn't going to resign.

Agree.

Given his salary to complicate matchings, the rental factor and the mutual unhappiness that seems to have fomented there on both sides, and they are dealing from a position of weakness.

Take advantage of 'em Danny!!

Who is giving up a solid player and a 1st for a Deng rental? Wouldn't CLE prefer that to Green?

Cle still wants to make the playoffs.  The acting GM is trying to win the job.

I think they would want a win now trade with the assets being there in the future.

Yeah maybe. Could see a 3 way deal with Charlotte or the Suns, I suppose.

Cs get a late 1st in either deal.

... but I still wonder if CLE wouldn't prefer the pick from either team. Current GM still looks good for getting value. And there's always their LeBron fantasy to consider...

Hmmm, Green + Bogans for Deng works but it might put us over the tax line, so could be a no-go.  Wonder if we'd do Green+Bass just to dump their salaries and hope to resign or S+T Deng in the offseason.  Even if he leaves for nothing our salary situation gets better, so it's close to a win-win.

Either way, this seems like exactly the kind of lower risk, high upside move Danny will be sniffing around.

You can always just add another 2-odd million to make the salaries work (Faverani, Olynyk, or Bradley, for example). I doubt the Cavs would want Bass, since they already have Thompson and Bennett. But if they'd do that, I'd be all over it.

If the Cavs are really trying to make the playoffs they might rather play Bass as their backup 4 and maybe try and get Bennett his minutes as a backup 3 and 5th big.  Don't know how much they'd balance competitiveness with developing Bennett, though.

From what I could find, Deng's "market value" is supposed to be $12-13 million per over 4 years. That's not a bargain, but it's not horrible for a guy who's going to likely be 32-33 in the end of his next contract.

I think it's just a new GM doing due diligence. I don't think Cleveland will deal him.
