Lakers don't have to trade their pick to get top talent. They can throw a max deal at Melo, James or Bosh in the off season, pick in the top-5 and surround that cast with a solid bench of ring chasers. Working on the assumption they get Bosh (the lesser of the 3) for $17M/yr ($70M/4yrs or $85M/5yrs), their pick falls outside of the top-3 and they decide to pick Smart and re-sign Pau for $10M/1yr with a team option for a 2nd.

Nash/Smart
Kobe
Marion/Rush/Ariza @VetMin
Bosh
Pau

Any competent ball handler will thrive with Kobe, Bosh and Pau (See: Mario Chalmers). Smart will have a very successful first season "backing up" Nash averaging 37mpg. Oh and if they can pawn Nash off on someone as an expiring in the off season they can probably sign Danny Granger for $16M/2yrs. This is life in Lakerland.

While I agree with your premise that team will never win anything, just like they weren't going to win anything with Dwight/Artest instead of Bosh/Marion. They have to go younger and more athletic or they're toast.

Speaking of toast, Steve Nash comes to mind...

The Celtics would probably have to take on Steve Nash in any deal involding Rondo.

why would someone do this? we'd have to use that pick to get a player that we HOPE will turn out to be as good as Rondo.  seems rather pointless when we already have someone that good

I don't think Ainge would be afraid to trade with LA. Makes a lot of sense. Kobe would tell management he wants Rondo. Danny would make the deal if it is a top 6 pick. 8 or 9 is a different story. Kobe is going to put a lot of pressure on his front office to deal that pick if necessary.

Easy...money. Rondo will be commanding max, or near max money, while a rookie will be playing under a much more cap friendly deal. So while it may be a risk, it's not as though it doesn't have it's merit.

There should be a 4th option.

Why?
2019 CStrong Historical Draft 2000s OKC Thunder.
PG: Jrue Holiday / Isaiah Thomas / Larry Hughes
SG: Paul George / Aaron McKie / Bradley Beal
SF: Paul Pierce / Tayshaun Prince / Brian Scalabrine
PF: LaMarcus Aldridge / Shareef Abdur-Raheem / Ben Simmons
C: Jermaine O'neal / Ben Wallace

Hopefully the Celts aren't in a position where they need to trade high level talent away in order to have a lower payroll. If that's the case then following the team's going to suck until we get different owners/management.

I think if we are offered a top 8 pick for Rondo he's gone. It's not a question about how much Rondo is worth, it's about where we are as a franchise in our rebuild, and that Rondo is approaching 30 coming off knee surgery and due a max contract, whereas the rest of our building blocks are rookies or draft picks.

Interestingly enough, I've chatted with a few Laker fans today and most were in agreement that anything after Embiid/Wiggins/Parker, they'd trade for Rondo.

Clearly fans don't run the organization but Laker fans I talked to seem to love the idea of pairing Rondo with Kobe.

Lets say the Lakers have the 9th pick.

If they give us the 9th plus, Jodie Meeks for Rondo and the Brooklyn nets pick.

Would you make the trade?

Can't see the lakers just giving up a top 10 pick for rondo without asking for a late pick

No way. Poor value for Rondo.  The #9 pick is unlikely to be an all-star, let alone play at that level over multiple seasons.

Yeah, that's putrid.

You're basically using Rondo to move up 8 or 9 spots in the draft.
