I don't get it...why would we do this?

Reason 1: To save money
Hump's $12M contract already comes off the books after this season.

Reason 2: To free cap space right now
Unless you want the money freed up now so that Boston can go after a free agent, but even then why?  This year the Celtics are somewhere in between garbage and mediocre.  Adding a MLE player sure as hell will not make the Celtics even remotely competitive this year.

Reason 3: To get Bynum on the team
Bynum mentally is probably the second worst NBA player in this league after Dwight...hell he might even be WORSE than Dwight.  The guy is a medical disaster who's career may be over before the end of this season (see: Brandon Roy).  The only difference is that Roy was actually a good player with a good attitude.  Bynum is a talented player with a horrible attitude.

Hump has probably been out most consistent (and arguably our best) player this year.  He has played with the same outstanding effort every night regardless of whether he plays 5 minutes or 25 - he's been the ultimate professional.  No complaining, even at the start of the season when he was practically a bench warmer.  He's pretty much putting up double-double numbers on a per-36 minute basis, his attitude has been great AND he's a $12M expiring contract.  He should actually have pretty good value as a trade asset so why trade him for a useless tub that nobody wants?

The logic behind this trade would be to save 6mill in a non winning season. This also helps in any future trades this season, it would keep the Cs 6 mill away from the luxury tax giving more flexibility.

One positive to this deal:

Bynum's got a tradeable, non-guaranteed contract for next year.  So does Bogans.

In theory, you could combine those two non-guaranteed deals with some other assets to land a max free agent.  Plus, we'd still have the trade exception to bring in another player.

I'm not sure that we'd have enough room under the luxury tax apron to make all that work, or who there are for free agents / guys on the trade block.  It's the most realistic way of landing a premium free agent in a trade / S&T, though.

No need to to blow the 6 million in cap savings right away on an MLE sized contract. Fill out the roster with vet min guys like Jason Collins and then make proper moves in the off season

Id do it bc bynums contract is line Erik dampers from a few years ago. Dallas used that contract to acquire Tyson chandler for nothing. They won a title. It could basically be used in a max deal sign and trade for any max guy next year.

The dust chip:

Read these links. Roy points to this too with his comments about adding bogans to it.

For all those really wanting us to get a melo type player, this is how it realistically gets done without destroying our roster.

Keep Humphries...If he starts and Rondo makes successful comeback the C 's will have a better team last years.
