The biggest problem with that team is D-Will.  He's gone from one of the top 5 players in the NBA to not really interested in playing basketball anymore.  He is just not dedicated anymore.

so he's gone all Mark Blount on them?

But worse, because Williams was, at one point, either 1A or 1B for point guards in the league.

I am not counting them out of the playoffs unless there is just major injury problems on that team, but I do not see them having a record that puts them amongst the 10 best teams in the league either. Age and lack of athleticism and a rookie coach hold them back in my opinion.

But as long as Atlanta finishes below them, a pick in the 15-20 area of this draft would be quite valuable. An Alex Poythress, Willie Cauley Stein, Mitch McGary, Dario Saric, or Perry Ellis could be there and be an absolute gem of a player to add to a top 8 pick like Wiggins, Randle, Parker, Smart, etc.

Earlier and later than that, actually. He was right around 20/10 from '07-'11.

  • GOT IT!!!
I still expect them to finish 4th or 5th in the East. Probably won't get past the second round in the playoffs though. Too many variables going on with that older team. The two being a DWill and Kidd.

He was close to those stats, but he wasn't really on the level of CP3 before Paul's knee injury. I don't think a ton of people put him on the same level as Rose during his mvp season either.

Williams was definitely ranked by many sources on the same tier as Paul even before his knee injury.  He came out of college a better long range shooter than Paul and took his team over .500 while Paul's was under .500.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

Ok, this is great. Imagine this ... in the next year or two, PP & KG leave the Nets and join the C's at Vet's minimum.

During the interim, Coach Stevens gets the team to gel, Rondo becomes Stockton (see my thread on that topic) with an outside shot, Green evolves into a 25+ per night guy, scoring inside or out (see the Bernard King reference).

We add a sixth man like Nextgen Posey for defense, spreading the floor, and hitting clutch 3s.

Then, PP & KG come back, as older versions of Sam Cassell & PJ Brown.

Now, instead of the resurrection of the 2008 Celtics, which isn't necessary as Doc is not longer the coach, we're the hydrid of the '89 Pistons a/o the '88 Lakers, where a brilliant mind like Stevens can easily get us to the promised land, mixing up a running game [ when the opponents' legs are out ] with a half court grind it out [ when the opponents' defenses are on high ].

I feel like there is a pretty great chance Pierce comes back.

I would be very surprised if KG doesn't retire after this year.

I'm not saying he made more of difference, just relaying one of the arguments for why people ranked them the way they did.  Although, being drafted to a worse team definitely improves your chances of winning MVP.  And it's not even like MVP is a measurement of who's the best player, that's been proven multiple times.

The basic idea is that people didn't know who was going to turn out the better player so they just called them 1A and 1B until they proved differently.  The fact that Deron was much bigger, a better shooter, and on a winning team instead of a losing team was enough to keep him at least on the same level in people's minds.  In 06-07 the year before Paul was an MVP contender, Williams received 15 all-NBA points to Paul's 3.  It's understandable they rose to the top tier together as Kidd/Billups/Nash were getting older and Arenas stopped scoring 30ppg.

Right. I don't think there's any debate anymore about who's a better player, but there certainly was at the time.

No. Kg and pp are not coming back unless its for 1 game before retirement.

Also regardless of their age , they will each demand 7-8 million a year. We are not in a position to be able to offer that.

The new celts are moving on.

I do miss pp/kg at times but danny made the right move. Even if we got nothing in return, those guys being gone gives others a chance to play real mins.

Going back to the topic, the nets are bad and imo wont be that great this year. The defense is weak due to overall age of the team. Deron williams looks more out of shape, johnson playing without fire and lopez cant do everything.

Even if kg/pp have their regular decent stats, the team overall is too slow. Prob 6th-7th spot at best
