One of my favorites on that list, though I don't think it the best western, was Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. I guess in a lot of ways it was more of a buddy film set in the old American(and Bolivian) west than it was a western about to bank robbers, but the Redford/Newman chemistry was outstanding and made for just one heck of a fun film.

I think Dances with Wolves and Unforgiven and The Shootist better overall westerns and films than Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, but if you asked me which I would rather throw into the DVD and watch tonight, it would be Butch and Sundance.

I voted once upon a time in the west.

Outlaw Josey Wales is a [dang] good movie. Some of the best Clint-delivered lines of all time.

Bounty hunter #1: You're wanted, Wales.
Josey Wales: Reckon I'm right popular. You a bounty hunter?
Bounty hunter #1: A man's got to do something for a living these days.
Josey Wales: Dyin' ain't much of a living, boy.

I  don't know how I forgot one of my favorites, "Jeremiah Johnson" with Robert Redford.

Hard to believe this did not make the list.
If the list was westerns it would be near the top. But it was cowboy films, and that is not a cowboy film. However I did include its lesser known older brother Little Big Man because of the cowboy components.

A great one, but yeah, not necessarily a "cowboy" movie.

One interesting thing to note is that there are several films here that made at one point or another the AFI top 100 films list without a single vote.

The original "Stagecoach" with John Wayne set the standard in the old black and white days. I missed a lot of inferences when I was a boy but got them when I bought it as an adult. The best modern western has to be Unforgiven as it was closer to the west as it really was rather than the shoot the guy from a moving horse crap that most movies show.

"Deserves got nothin to do with it" from Unforgiven is probably my favorite cowboy line.

A couple of my all time favorite movies are outside-the-box choices: Juzo Itami's "Tampopo" and Jim Jarmusch's "Dead Man"

The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly

No contest.
