FIFA must be kidding us ... They sold (does anyone think otherwise??) the world cup to Qatar and now they realised that mid June it`ll REALLY hot ! So Blatter suggested the WC should be moved to winter!

I really hope UEFA and the major football federations will not agree to this

You may want to do some research on what seasons are.
Jeff Green - Top 5 SF

[Kevin Garnett]
"I've always said J. Green is going to be one of the best players to ever play this game"

I think the issue the OP is referring too isn't the season as much as moving the calender date of the World Cup to accommodate the fact that they're playing it in a desert.

Which would screw up all of the soccer leagues all over the world which already build everything around the World Cup and other various international contests.

I know.  I was being funny.

All of the stadiums for the World Cup are enclosed and will be air conditioned.  It will be in June/July like always.

I hope so.

I wonder whether the AC will hold up to that much constant use.

They have held events before without issue.  Now granted nothing the scale of the World Cup and a number of the stadiums will be new and more or less untested, but Qatar is one of the richest countries in the world.  I think they will be fine.

I still have no idea why Qatar, a country with a population of 250,000 that has never come close to qualifying for the World Cup, was given the host status, but that is a question for a different thread.

Really you don't? Bribes, bribes, bribes.

And I'm really skeptical they pull of having so many stadiums work well, especially with their weird modular sort of design.

I think the answer is pretty obvious.

Of course I "know", but I still can't believe it happened.  I get Russia.  Big country, good fan base, never hosted before, but Qatar just bothers the crap out of me.  That country should not be hosting the world cup.  I mean more people call Toledo, Ohio home than the entire country of Qatar.  Just odd.

Exactly, it's a joke that the world's largest sporting event is going to be in Qatar. Fifa was bribed and gave it to Qatar, rather blatantly I might add. Now Blatter is coming up with ideas to improve the experience, he could have just examined these issues before selection and realized Qatar was/is not a valid host nation. I guess it can be kind of hard to offer any rational analysis when there's a fat stack of cash blocking your view.

First of all i should have said january instead of winter to solve the north-south hemi confusion :D

I`ve read Blatter`s comments and his main issue is not the conditions inside the stadiums. We can all make a very safe bet that the A/C will be more than excellent. But what about the life outside the football games? They can`t a/c the whole country !

Which brings us to what Moranis said... They knew about the disadvantages. It`s not only the heat. Islamic laws are not very "compatible" with the western life style. Can you imagine 40.000 english fans not allowed to drink beer in public?
I was in Athens during the CL final Milan -Liverpool and the day of the game the center of the city was burried under tons of beer cans!

I guess the "gift" was too big to reject it.

I'm thinking UEFA Champions League. So, do they just abandon that or move it as well?

Someone must have payed A TON of money to keep it in Qatar.
