Quote
By a unanimous vote of the league’s owners at a Las Vegas resort, the Bobcats were granted permission Thursday to change their nickname to the Hornets. That change will take effect after the 2013-14 season, allowing enough lead time to switch uniforms, logos and signage in and around Time
Warner Cable Arena.
Quote
Once the NBA approved the Pelicans name, Jordan formally requested the Hornets name in May, in time to complete the transition by the start of the 2014-15 season.

It's nice to have them back to their appropriate name, even if it's not really the same franchise. Bobcats was an awful team name, although Pelicans has it beat.

Now Utah should change their name so New Orleans can have it back.

Yep, and the Twolves can change back to the Lakers, that would be great!

I don't see what's so great about Hornets as a team name.

I'm not the biggest fan of the name either, but I'd think for mainly 2 reasons:

1. Charlotte has only ever experienced a popular, winning culture as the Hornets. The Larry Johnson era was pretty exciting for them. I still see a bunch of Charlotte Hornets snap-backs being popular even today.

2. Nobody in the entire universe has ever uttered the words "I like the Bobcats team name".  ;D

I read somewhere that it has something to do with a regiment in North Carolina during the Civil War. Bobcats came about because the then owner's first name was Bob.

Pelicans is a great name for a team out of Louisiana.

At least the Bobcats made the playoffs once! Too bad their lives ended quick by the hands of the Stan Van Gundy-led Magic  :(

1. We have lots of Hornets here.

2. It's the name the city voted for back when we first got the team. So the people of Charlotte picked it. We had nothing to do with the Bobcats name and most of us don't like
it or the colors. Or MJ as an owner either.

i agree. to be honest i am at a loss as to how anyone could believe pelicans is a great name for a pro sports team. not only is it a dorky looking animal, it conjures up images of being awkward.

but to each their own.
I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

hurray !

I was a Hornets fan in the early years  ,  always C's first ,  but they were closer to me .

I hate when teams STEAL a cities name for a team.

New Orleans is Music... Should be the jAZZ ......great name for that city..........Jazz is a stupid name for a city in Utah
Utah is nothing ...name them the saltlickers....

Glade Hornets are returning..maybe decent basketball will follow .

I really detest franchise names moving from one city to another. If a team is relocated, they should acquire a new name and leave the name available to its old city in the case a team returns to it.

New Orleans is in Louisiana, which is the Pelican State.

Pelicans is a non-offensive, easily marketable, family friendly name that's unique to its locality.

What you would propose as a better alternative?

Yeah the fact that the franchise was named after the owner, who wasn't a good owner in my view, is enough of a reason to change it.

If that does happen one day, I'd like to see the name New Orleans Jazz Hands.
