I think it'll be josh smith under the microscope with that contract.  ENIGMA.   Finally out of Atlanta, new team , system, role etc.
is he going to rise to the occasion and become a force, look good within a team concept or continue to make me at the least scratch my head

Detroit now has a beastly front line, but almost no perimeter game from it.  Smith is the worst shooter in the league.  Last year, Monroe hit a hair over 30% of his non-layups, which is Josh Smith-ish shooting, as he tried to adjust to playing with another big.  He made around 40% of his non-layups the year before.

Drummond made only one shot outside of 10 feet last season, and was 15-50, 30%, from 3-10 feet.  That gives the Pistons three guys who will eat up minutes and miss seven out of every ten shots that aren't layups or dunks.  Maybe they will play a prison style of basketball where they just throw the ball at the rim and go after the rebound.

Strange signing, which doesn't address need, unless Dumars thinks Smith can play the three full time despite his perimeter woes.

When Dumars was talking about drafting Tony Mitchell in an interview after the draft, he was talking about how Detroit wasn't able to handle big perimeter scorers like LeBron James and Kevin Durant. That they weren't able to matchup physically. Talking about how important it was to have versatile 6-8, 6-9, defensive forwards to handle bigger lineups and small-ball lineups.

It feels Josh Smith is right in line with Dumars' reasoning for Tony Mitchell. To add that type of defensive weapon to Detroit's roster. Someone who can cover those scorers, be a multi-positional defender and thus allow Detroit to maintain it's defensive integrity.

The problem is that Smith isn't versatile as a SF.  He's a power-3 who can't shoot.  Put him with a PF and or C who can shoot, and it isn't as big of an issue.  I would have loved him on the Cs with KG in that role, figuring he's a big,  mobile guy who could body up LeBron, and maybe feast a bit going to the hoop at the other end, since KG helps space the floor.  There will be no floor spacing with this Pistons line up.

Some Detroit fans seem to think this means they're going to make another run at Toronto for Rudy Gay using Monroe.
That would be pretty darn sweet.

SF - Rudy Gay
PF - Josh Smith
C  - Andre Drummond

Oh my goodness, all that athleticism! Wow!

This would make the signing start to make a ton of sense.

Not a huge fan of the roster as is though.

IS Dumars that stupid to collect that many players who can't shoot? He'd better have an extremely efficient catch and shoot SG on his roster, as well as a lights out shooting PG, because Gay is a horrible catch and shooter.  He's also horrible as a face up shooter too.

Detroit would be well advised to stay away from Rudy Gay.  Ugly contract.

Surprised Smith signed in Detroit, guess there wasn't much to the S&T rumors that had him going to Houston.  Not sure where that leaves Houston now, as they need a PF. They have been rumored to be interested in Ryan Anderson, but the Pelicans seem to have zero interest in Asik.

I don't think the Hawks were willing to take on Lin's contract. That made a sign and trade hard to work between the two teams.

Yeah, I doubt there is much interest in Lin throughout the league.  Not a good value at his current salary.

I would really like to see Houston get there hands on Ryno, though.  Just not sure how they get that done.

Agreed. For all his boneheaded offensive possessions, especially at the 3, JSmoove is a great defender when he feels like being one.

I remember when Joe Dumars was widely considered a genius.

Oh how far he has fallen.

Dumars drafted Darko Milicic (and Mateen Cleaves and Rodney White), gave Rip Hamilton a huge extension while signing Ben Gordon, signed Charlie Villanueva alongside Gordon....

Is anyone really expecting Dumars to do the smart thing?
