Just thinking here, if Danny moved Pierce to a team with cap space (who'd buy him out) +3M and a minimal return that would give the C's a large trade exception and room under the apron. Could that then be used in a S&T to acquire a free agent?

You could in theory then pursue Tyreke Evans, Al Jefferson et al via S&T.

It seems like if you are going to release him you might as well find some team looking to get rid of a 5-6M contract and take that on so the $ are even and create a trade exception of ~10M.

Trade Pierce for a trade exception.

Really the only team, if you're talking about waiving Pierce before June 30 when his contract becomes fully guaranteed.

If I am understanding the OP correctly, he is talking about dealing Pierce's $15 million team option before the June 30th deadline to receive a large trade exception in return.

If that's the case, then Orlando is the only team I can think of that could absorb Pierce's $15 mil and send a trade exception in return.

The Magic's TE comes from the Dwight Howard trade they made last summer.

Yes. They are the only team with a TE large enough to do it.

Yeah, now the other part of the question is what I am unsure of but have actual wondered the same thing.

Say for example the Celts receive a $15 mil TE in exchange for Pierce. Does that free up $15 million that they can use to sign a free agent or is that just $15 million they can use to absorb another contract in a trade?

Also, could you use a TE in exchange for a sign and trade?

Could use it to claim a player who's been amestied.

But otherwise, the TE can bring in a player only via a trade. Can't use it to sign a free agent, but you could use it to acquire that same free agent via a sign and trade from his former team.

Wouldn't be an awful idea. I am just ready for either Pierce to be with us or us to trade him. I am so sick of the waiting game already. Pierce has been my favorite player since i was 11. I do not want to see him go. But would rather it be quick and painless if he is gone. And preferably get us a very good player.
