I believe "shooting" is the expression because things like guiding or aiming cause you to miss. The release in basketball has to be total like you are firing a gun or an arrow. It is that non-hold back element that gives you that perfect arc. If you hold back at all in an attempt to somehow guide the ball, it is a sure miss.

Oh, the horror!  Someone called a list of items "bullets".  Be afraid, very afraid!

Exactly, it creates the opposite effect
It creates paranoid thinking, which makes kids subconsiously think about guns, which in turn makes them do it anyway
