Hey Guys,
The guy that works on the other side of my cube wall is fairly new, a month or so. I can't see him because of the cube wall but I can hear him clear as day.

He has recently started chewing gum all day with his mouth open.  I have to deal with the lip smacking for hours on end and im starting to go crazy.

I think he also listens to comedy acts on his ipod because there are also times where he is just constantly laughing to himself under his breath for hours.

What do I do?  Ask him to stop? leave it be?

Also, he has a really loose spacebar key so it makes a rediculous noise every time he uses it.  Im going nuts over here!
CB Draft LA Lakers: Lamarcus Aldridge, Carmelo Anthony,Jrue Holiday, Wes Matthews  6.11, 7.16, 8.14, 8.15, 9.16, 11.5, 11.16

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
Chewing gum, laughing to himself under his breath, and having an iffy space bar all sound like pretty viable things to have going on at work.

I'd say let it all go.

Hate to say it but I have to agree here. If he listens to comedy acts on his ipod, cant you listen to music and just tune him our with earbuds?

Ask him for a stick of gum every time he's chewing it. Pretty soon, he'll get tired of subsidizing your gum habit; if not, hey, free gum!

I take it you can't play some classical or jazz music or white noise on your own iPod or computer?

Or a babbling brook with noise-canceling headphones, that will allow you to phase out your soul-scorching job and focus your inner chi in a more positive direction?

That seems like a minor nuisance.

Back in my day of cube life, the lady next to me liked country music and no ear buds.

Im probably just picky.  oh well.  I'll ipod it up as well.  Though I only like the one earbud policy so I can hear if somebody is standing in my cube entrance.  so i'll still hear the gum, laughing, and space bar.

Why can't everyone else be perfect like i am?   :)

He is not listening to comedy, he is checking the updated topics on CelticsBlog.  Go easy on him.  That is not an iffy spacebar...that is the refresh key.

When I worked for the Attorney General's office, we had unionized secretaries outside my office voicing anti-Caucasian sentiment and talking about how well-endowed their appropriately-nicknamed boyfriends were.  It was laughable to expect them to act even remotely professional, let alone do any work.

You can deal with some gum-chewing.

I agree it probably isn't a big deal, but at the same time if it is really driving you crazy, if you don't resolve it one day you will go off and cause a big scene and make a jacka$$ out of yourself, so it is better to deal with it now.  I'm sure there are ways you can approach the subject without ruffling his feathers, but also letting him know.  I mean it is quite possible he doesn't even know you can hear him especially if it is his first job in a cubicle and he may not want to be that guy that annoys his cube mates.

Welcome to Cubicle World.

Best advice I can give you is to deal with the nuances of others.  Everyone has them.  Unless its a ridiculous thing, its probably best just to put up with them.

If gum chewing is the worst that you're dealing with, you don't have it that bad at all.  Trust me.
