I would like some clarification on this please.

What would count against the cap? Would it get us under it enough to go after some decent free agents?

Could someone give me an overview on this please? I have been hard pressed to find details regarding this.

I believe only the guaranteed portion (somewhere between 4 and 5 million) would count towards the cap, and Pierce would no longer be able to resign with us next season.

Pierce's final year is guaranteed (by now) for only $5 million, so that's what would count against the Celtics' cap next season if they decided to release him.

Not sure what happens if Pierce were to retire: whether the full $5 million would hit all at once, or if it could be spread out, or if there'd be no financial hit for the Celtics at all. I doubt there'd be no cost to the C's, but am not 100% positive.

There's a number of different thing sthat could happen with Pierce this off-season.

-We keep him at his full $15m (approx)
-We release him, and owe him $5m
-We trade him
-We amnesty him (owe him the full $15m, but it doesn't against the cap)
-Pierce retires (which could entail a number of different scenarios of it's own)

It's really just too hard to tell which direction Ainge is going to go in, with there being so many options.

Thanks everybody. That helps clear things up. So I guess if we did not pick up the option we would be at around 60 million in contracts next year which is still over the cap of 58 million.

We figure out a way to sign Josh Smith , keep Pierce and KG, raise #19 - Pierce and KG retire and we go from there...

KG / Free agent Center / Wilcox / Melo
Josh Smith / Sullinger / Bass
Pierce / Jeff Green / Free agent
Bradley / Lee / Crawford
Rondo / TWill/ Barbosa

:)

If we did amnesty Pierce he would likely draw a large bid and we would have to pay the difference but much less than 15 million. I think it is most likely we either trade him or keep him.  I do not anticipate amnesty or buyout. Paul is definately worth the ten million dollars difference above his buyout.

At lot of PP future will depend on how far we go in the playoffs and/or how ugly we lose.
