I saw his name come up in a thread on Warrick.  Sac drafted him early in the second round in 2010 and he signed a $3.8M contract only to get waived after almost 2 seasons and something like 20 games.  He played 1 season at Marshall.  His Dad was a NFL football player.

He appears to be inconsistent in the NBDL at best.  Seems like an intersting project but not sure we have room on the roster for a project with two key injuries and our own project (Melo).

Statistically he is far and away the best big man in the D-League and it isn't even close.

I wouldn't mind a ten day, and then evaluate what he can do

No reason not to try him on a 10 day.

If you go through the d-league stats on per48, there is nobody else close to giving what he gives in blocks/rebounds/but even more so if you throw in fg%.  That Ohlebrecht guy at least shows up in the top 50 of blocks and rebounds per and shoots a slightly better fg% but apparently he already turned us down.

For comparison, Jerome Jordan seems to be a guy some people like, let us compare.

Jordan blks per48 3.98, reb per48 12.5, fg% .585.  NBDL lists him as the #2 prospect behind Mack.  Not bad.

Whiteside blks per48 7.54, reb per48 23.7, fg% .592.  He is not listed on the top 10 prospect list.

I don't want to beat a dead horse here but, he played 13 minutes last game, had 7 rebs and 2 blocked shots.  People who know about the game say two things that translate from college, and I'd have to imagine the D-League as well, are defense and rebounding.

If we are looking for a 7ft guy who can block shots and rebound, he certainly seems capable, at least in limited minutes which is what we need.

Give him a shot!

Ha ha--unless he's injured, then he can be taller.

I like him! A 10 day contract wouldn't hurt!

Not sure he is even a rebounder, but I'd like to give someone who might be able to protect the rim a shot.

  • I'm a Paul Heyman guy.
At this point any big man should be worth a shot as long as it's a 10 day at first.

Haven't seen him since SacTo, which is not a lot. But I know he's a legitimate 7-footer, so at worst he could atleast bother layups.

Sure, 10 day sounds about right for the start.

I take it Danny will wait another two days to see if anyone better gets dropped from a team--then he likely will dip into the d-league for a pure center.

He appears to be competing with Tim Ohlbrecht (the guy who turned down the 10 day contract from the Celtics) for minutes at center.  Ohlbrecht seems to be the starter, that is why Whiteside only played 13 minutes last game.

The game before last, it appears that Ohlbrecht got into foul trouble and Whiteside got 29 minutes.  All he did was get 13 pts, 15 Rebs, and 4 Blks.

So I guess both the Rio Grande Valley Vipers' Coach and Danny Ainge both like Ohlbrecht much better than Whiteside.

Whiteside must be like Melo, potential galore but just not quite ready for prime time.

Danny is making this decision by Friday right ... given the deadline for adding playoff eligible players?

No, that's a misunderstood deadline.  Players have to be dropped from their old team by the 1st in order to be eligible for another team's playoff roster, but they don't have to be signed by the first.
