The Boston Celtics and Brooklyn Nets have discussed a trade for Celtics star Paul Pierce, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

The Nets' offer centered on forward Kris Humphries, guard MarShon Brooks and a first-round draft pick, but the Celtics want a more substantial package to consider moving Pierce, league sources said.

"The Celtics still highly value Pierce and it wouldn't make sense to trade him for that kind of a package if they're keeping Kevin Garnett," one league source said.

Boston has shown interest in guard Mirza Teletovic and securing another possible first-round pick, but the Nets have shown no inclination to pay that steep of a price for Pierce.

Boston had interest in guard C.J. Watson in a separate deal, but Brooklyn doesn't want to part with him, sources said.

Eh. They didn't want him last year, I don't think this will amount to much

The story was that Pierce shot the proposal down, not Brooklyn/NJ.

Well I would trade PP for Smith, but I can't think of someone I really want off the Nets.

Nets don't have any assets that they would move for Pierce that I'd find attractive.

Wouldn't he just shoot it down again this year? There's no difference really

Threat of retirement would do it.

No way the Nets would want to trade a lottery pick for a player who they credibly believed would retire.

They'd be giving up nothing close to the value of a lottery pick this year.

Plus Deron is there long term now, JJ too. Easier to sell Pierce on the team now as they're playoff bound.

I thought it'd be harder since they have less assets and aren't looking to cut salary (since they aren't rebuildin' and Mr. Russian is rich)

He doesn't have a no trade, but I think he still has considerable power simply by refusing to report somewhere or threatening retirement.  So it was definitely reported by some that Pierce killed a potential deal that would have landed us the Nets lotto pick.  Fwiw, that pick ended up going to Portland and they used it to take Damian Lillard.  Could have used it on Harrison Barnes or (my personal favorite) Andre Drummond, though.

Some report it differently, though.  I heard the Nets turned it down.  But really I still lean towards the story that Pierce killed it... because that Gerald Wallace deal seemed like a panic move and I think they would have preferred Pierce over Wallace.

Just an FYI, back in 2005 the Celtics tried to trade Pierce to Portland for an instant-expiring Nick Van Exel contract and the #3 pick that would have been used to take Chris Paul.  Ainge was very high on Chris Paul at the time.  Apparently Pierce killed that one too.  I don't think you need a "no trade" clause to kill a deal... you just have to throw a stink about playing somewhere.  It's the reason why I continue to think it's unlikely Pierce or KG get moved.  They'd have to want to play somewhere... especially at this point where they both have a foot in retirement already.

The Nets have virtually no desireable assets of any kind.  All of their players (or their contracts) are terrible.

There are only two players I would trade Pierce to the Nets for and I don't think the Nets are going to move Deron Williams or Brook Lopez for Pierce.  If I'm Boston and I want to go into rebuilding I might consider the following trade:

Pierce, Green, Bass, Terry

for

Wallace, Humphries, Evans, Taylor, Teletovic, Brooks, Blatche, 2013 1st

Basically clears out Boston's dead weight (and Pierce which would hurt) for Wallace's dead weight (smaller combined and more easily moved in the future), Humphries next year expiring contract (making him very valuable this summer), and a bunch of young guys (or vets on good deals).

Probably wouldn't do it, but I wouldn't immediately hang up the phone laughting either.
