What up!
During the day today I was just thinking; What if all the trade rumors actually went through?
The rumors that I particularly have in mind is, of course, those involving Josh Smith, Eric Bledsoe and DeAndre Jordan.
I know what you all would say about trading KG and Pierce, but why not get the best value for them, while we can?

Now to the trades (I've tried to make some realistic trades which involved KG and Pierce.)

1st trade:
BOS sends:
Kevin Garnett + Jason Collins + top 20 protected 1st round pick.

LAC sends:
DeAndre Jordan + Eric Bledsoe.

2nd trade:
BOS sends:
Paul Pierce

ATL sends:
Josh Smith + Johan Petro (Expring contract).

These trades would ultimately leave us with a potential squad like this:

PG; Rajon Rondo/Eric Bledsoe/Leandro Barbosa/
SG; Avery Bradley/Courtney Lee/Jason Terry
SF: Jeff Green/Terrence Williams (If we choose to keep him)
PF: Josh Smith/Jared Sullinger/Brandon Bass/Wilcox
C: DeAndre Jordan/Johan Petro/Fab Melo

(I know that if these trades goes through we will probably also have to give up Jared Sullinger etc.)

But for now, would you be disappointed if we ended up with a lineup like this?
Do you think that this team would be able to compete for the title in a few years?

Welcome to NBA dead zone.

Not good enough to compete for a title.

Too much money tied up on B level stars and role players.

No good way to become a contender.

Well, yeah.  I'd pretty much figure that's where we are for the next couple of seasons.

But that's where we're headed anyway.  Keeping Pierce and Garnett doesn't prevent that from happening.

The difference is, the roster in the OP has multiple pieces that can be traded in the right deal.  Even guys like Smith, Green, and Jordan -- on rather hefty contracts -- could be moved if they put up solid numbers and develop their games a little while they are here.

Trading Pierce and KG for pieces like that is all about avoiding the tanking phase of rebuilding as much as possible by getting assets to put us closer to the next KG / Allen type trade.

Yep.

And I'm left wondering why the Celtics gave up a #1.

Feel like its Boston's version of Armaggedon. When I saw KG wearing the All-star uniform - it didnt feel right to me. Also Pierce wearing a different uniform is like heresy.

Give me not good enough with cap flexibility over hoping someone will take the overpriced nice players.

I posted some of this in the Rondo/Howard thread.  DO the KG trade.  Trade Bass/Rondo for Howard.  Pierce/Sullinger for Smith (using Warriors as 3rd team).  Then trade Jason Terry and the first round pick for Jeremy Lamb/Eric Maynor.
9 man rotation, starters in bold

Maynor
Bledsoe
Bradley
Lamb
Lee
Green
Smith
Howard
Jordan

Eventually Lamb would have to be your starting shooting guard and your top perimeter scorer. Maynor/Lamb isnt helping OKC this year, Terry could help them win now even if it is in a limited role.

This team would be built around the inside duo of Howard and Smith.  This team would be awesome in terms of athleticism.  Not so much on free throws.

I'm not giving up Garnett _and_ a pick for Bledsoe and Jordan. If anything, I'd like a pick coming back my way.

Also, no giving up Collins and Morrow instead of Petro.

And I still don't really like the final result... I guess I'm hard to please.

Consign yourself to the fact that the Celtics are going to be a mid tier team until Ainge and Rivers realise their championship run is more than likely over. You can't help father time and the C's two best players have miles in their legs.
