So what? These are not elite players and will not garner you elite assets in return.

My thinking exactly.  When we got Ray and KG we had a #5 pick as well as 2 young players with lots of upside in Big Al and Gerald.  I just don't see being able to turn any of those players into a HOF-level player.

Exactly. That's what the 2007 5th overall pick (Green) and Delonte were. That's what Theo Ratliff's expiring deal, Al Jefferson, and Gerald Green were.

And who will be playing the part of Kevin Garnett next offseason? Or will that once in a generation talent be available in 2015? 2016? 2020? How long are you willing to wait?

Kevin Love would be my guess.

Love does not have the talent to turn a franchise around. He is not and will never be on the same level as Garnett.

Because the wolves were making the playoffs with kg? Oh wait they hadn't even made it in 4 seasons and kg only got past the first round once?!
Don't be so quick to pass judgment, not even Garnett could do much with that franchise outside of 2004

That's just not true, in any legitimate sense of the word, and to use that gross distortion to justify blowing this team up right now is a falsehood of the first order.

Garnett and Allen were available for pennies on the dollar. Ainge traded two things of value - the 5th pick in the draft, and to a lesser extent the one-horse pony that is Al Jefferson.

Ainge's genius was NOT in accumulating "assets," as so many like to dub the bags of trash we shipped out for Garnett and Allen - it was in being ready when two franchises were holding fire sales for HOFers.

Unless someone's got a couple of franchises at the ready to fire sale their own HOFers again, this notion that shipping out HOFers for guards who can't shoot, badly limited centers on overpriced contracts, et al. is about as illogical as you could possibly get.

That same package is what landed CP3 and it landed KG. (Trades are very similar, Gordon/Jefferson + Kaman/Ratliff + picks + other players.

Lesser stars Ray Allen and Paul Gasol types generally don't get all of those elements.

Allen was 32 and coming off ankle surgery. He had 3 years left at 18 mill per. There is a reason he was had for "pennies on the dollar." He was an albatross on a team looking to build around KD.  Lol no one else was willing to pay what the Celtics were for his situation. Ainge was desperate. He had little leverage in a Pierce trade b/c after missing out on Oden and Kd it was obvious we were rebuilding and looking to move him if we were going to trade him. Allen was a huge risk!!! It's why we were able to move Wally instead of Theo.

KG was turning 31 and wanted another Max deal. After Minnesota had already paid him two they were fed up. Especially after missing the playoffs for three straight years. The only other competitive offer was Lamar Odom and Andrew Bynum. Bynum at the time had shown nothing like the promise that Jefferson had. Green was still a prospect. But more importantly Odom had I believe 3 years left on his deal at 12-13 mill. He was not going to put you over the top and Minnesota was sick of paying money. They wanted Theo's expiring. They also wanted KG to go East.

But what the heck is a one-horse pony?

As far as tricks go, Big Al has the post offense, a decent little 12-15 ft jumper, rebounding, and some shot blocking.  He can't move his feet on defense like he can on offense, but the kid has talent.  He might be overpaid, but he's not being paid for nothing.

He was considered the best low post player around under 30, and he went to be coached by McHale.  It was a pretty good move for a CTRL+ALT+DEL for Minny, which was going nowhere.

What teams are going nowhere and need a reboot?

With only Bradley left as a healthy, talented, rookie contract guy and no sizable expirings, and no high or lottery picks in the foreseeable future, we're definitely in a different position.  Getting HOF talent is quite unlikely.  Getting star talent isn't likely either, but Ainge has a knack for not letting things go.

I actually think this concept solves a number of problems that exist with both the LAC and ATL rumors.

LAC gets more value for trading Jordan and Bledsoe. Atlanta gets a young asset in return for Smith, who is proving very hard to trade for equal value. The Cs get what they want -- Smith and Bledsoe -- while creating a justifiable 'no-trade' clause waivable scenario for PP and KG.
