Just out of curiosity, how many of you actually know the total amount of home runs Barry Bonds hit in his career.

First number that came in my head was right, but I quickly changed it to a different number.
In the end I was 4 off (on the high side).

your numbers are reversed. It is 762, I'm just wondering how many people actually knew that. Like if I asked the question, how many home runs did Hank Aaron end his career with, I would suspect 95% of the people on this board would know 755, I just don't think Bonds' total is anywhere near as recognizable.

I thought I knew (and was correct) but wasn't absolutely sure.
762 is nowhere near as important as 755 or 714.

I always felt the well known-ness of baseball numbers (or even sports numbers in general) went: 61>>>714>755

I'd put 56 in that realm too. (DiMaggio hitting streak)

I was in the I thought I knew and I was right category. Nowhere near as important as 755, 714, or 61. But his numbers dont lie and you can't take away the fact that he is one of baseballs greatest hitters of all time.
Spent a 1/3rd of his 21 year MLB career as MVP. Most of them before the roids accusations. Thats just silly.

Completely agree with you, but we seem to be in the minority on this board, given the many comments on this board on a recent thread on PEDs. Check it out: http://forums.celticsblog.com/index.php?topic=62566.15Kinda sickens me.

Fortunately being in the minority doesn't make us wrong (especially about this)

Bonds record is legit! He was taking something not banned by baseball at the time he was hitting HR's. Also before he started taking HGH he was still arguably the best player to ever play the game. That's if you follow baseball!

762
A legit 762
Most dominant player I have ever seen. You literally could not pitch to him. Baseball has been tainted (pitchers and hitters) with PED use for the better part of 30 years or so, and he has been the best of this era.

What I don't get about baseball is how "greenies" i.e. uppers and various forms of "speed" are always overlooked. Those things were illegal, yet they were used by virtually every baseball player in the late 50's, 60's and 70's (through 2005 when baseball finally banned them) and they absolutely enhanced performance in that they got the players ready to play game in and game out. There really isn't much difference between them and steroids, especially given how widespread steroid use obviously was. I just don't get why guys like Mays get passes for greenie use, why a guy like Bonds gets crucified for steroid use. Totally hypocritical.
Jim Bouton a former Yankee pitcher in his book said Mantle and Maris were pot smokers. Dock Ellis pitched a no hitter while high on LSD. Now granted the performance enhancing affect of those drugs can be debated, but not of greenies.
