Why would I want similar talent that is more expensive?

Portland takes Jonas Valanciunas.
I only realized Jonas was still on the board about 45 minutes ago. I couldn't believe he was still there. Excellent pickup at this later stage in the draft. Should've been a first or second round pick.

I don't know, I think the 1st round would have been a pretty wild over pay.

Valanciunas has shown a lot more offensive skill / feel for the game than I expected.

When I saw him previously for Lithuania, he looked very raw and unskilled but I have been really impressed with him this year in Toronto. Much better footwork and ball/head fakes than I expected and has a few early work in progress post moves and a short jump shot.

Valanciounas can clearly be a well above average defender and rebounder. Combine that with his offensive potential. Valanciounas is a very good center prospect.

Valanciounas wouldn't have made sense for a win-now team but I think Jonas was one of the most valuable prospects available in the draft after the keepers were selected. He would've been a great fit for anyone building towards the future.
