With the team playing well recently.  Who could Danny add that fits the current team?  Who could be added in the offseason?

If KG and PP fit better in a half court, defense first type system and they want to play one to two more years.  Who fits?  Bradley seems to fit that.  Terry does.  Anyone else?  What if two trades were made:

Before Deadline:  Millsap comes in, Jeff Green to Warriors.  Sullinger and Richard Jefferson to Jazz.  Draft pick from Boston to Utah.

Millsap is a do-it-all type that would excel in River's system.

Before Deadline:  Try to get JJ Reddick for Brandon Bass.  If that doesnt work, Randy Foye, at 6'4" , is #12 in the league in 3P attempts and his hitting over 40%.  Maybe work him into the Millsap deal.

After deadline:

Rondo/Bass for Eric Gordon/Jason Smith

Can Rondo fit in with Rivers/Davis?

For Boston:

KG
Millsap
Pierce
Gordon
Bradley
---------
Foye
Terry
Courtney Lee
Jason Smith
Wilcox
Melo

Smith gives you a servicable backup at the 4.  Wilcox and Melo would have to man the backup 5 minutes.  Lee would have to slide over and backup Pierce at the 3.  You would have more shooters by keeping Terry and Lee while adding Gordon and Foye.

You could keep the current talent on this team and as long as KG and Pierce don't decline too much, they'll continue to scrap away and make the playoffs for a couple more years.  They will not be a title contender, but there will be enough linger essence of the former greatness to at least make it as a 7th or 8th seed and keep the fans interested enough to sell out games.

Then in a few years when Pierce and KG are finally retired, we'll probably begin a lengthy rebuild.  Unless we luck into a superstar with a mid-1st round draft pick, it's going to be a long ride back to the top.

You can keep them one more year or two.  My point is, instead of sending them packing and building around Rondo - why not build around Gordon/Millsap because they may fit in with the current team better.

If your goal is for the Celtics to be bad enough to get a draft pick with a decent shot of getting a superstar, trading Pierce or KG for useful players but no star will probably prolong the time it takes to get to that "Bobcats bad" level of talent needed to get that high draft pick without getting super-lucky in the lottery.

There's no reason to think Rondo won't be here and no reason to think they can't be contenders if he is.

Yeah, maybe Rondo is still the future.  Gordon is obviously not real happy in New Orleans.  Would he be better in Boston?  Is he worth Rondo?

I think you can still go into the next 2 years with Rondo, KG, and Pierce as your corp.

The key is to get a bigger 2 guard who can shoot and slash that plays solid defense (to offset moving bradley to the bench), and a 4 or a 5 who can rebound, and play in the post.

The shooting/slashing 2 guard will help take some of the burden off of pierce to get us shots in the 4th or get us to the line. Bradley could be this guy, but he has to work on his offense.  Mayo is another guy who comes to mind and will be a free agent.

The big is to obviously help us with rebounding but also give us another option to throw the ball into and get a shot when the offense bogs down.  Someone like David West.  I think he might be a free agent.

I think Danny is thinking the same way, considering he basically had trades completed for both last season until West chose indy and Memphis backed out on the Mayo trade.  Think about our team this year if we had those two?

A few side things to make this really work, is Doc has to let Green play more and play pierce less...and Rondo must find the confidence to take shots and get to the line.

And if you can't make that happen, then yes, you trade Rondo for a PG/SG with a better ability to score and pair them with Jeff Green, Sully, Avery and build around them.  I would considered Eric Gordon.  After last night, I might even look at Kemba and Mullins for Rondo.  And a long shot...go after westbrook for Rondo.
