Tom Haberstroh is one of the dudes who writes PER diem now that Hollinger is gone. He is obviously not a Celtics fan, but for those of you without the Insider subscription, here are his trade ideas (and my snark):
1) Sullinger, Bradley, Green, and our 2013 1st
to TORONTO for Kyle Lowry and Linas Kleiza
He sells this as a way for the team to stay afloat. I think that the only thing more demoralizing for fans at this point than losing Rondo would be watching Sullinger and Bradley go. I hope you don't mind my saying- this is a horrible, terrible idea and I would sooner pour hot soup in my eyes than see it happen.
2) Garnett, Pierce, and Collins
to the LAKERS for Howard, Duhon, and MWP
Forget Celtics fans and Lakers fans for a minute. Is there ANY nba fan in the world who wouldn't hate watching these two franchises stitched together like basketball's answer to the Human Centipede? I'll take it, I mean, I'll be the first to admit that I want Dwight Howard on my team. But if a team consisting of Steve Nash, Pau Gasol, Kobe Bryant, Paul Pierce, and Kevin Garnett wins a basketball game, who really is the winner there? I kinda think we all lose.
One thing I know for sure- I would buy air time during Laker games to sell Cialis.
3) Pierce and Wilcox
to MEMPHIS for Wroten and Gay
I hate the Pierce for Gay swap, but throw Wroten in there and it's not the worst thing in the world. If Pierce had to go, I wouldn't lose sleep over this move.
4) Pierce, Bradley, Wilcox, and 2013 1st
to UTAH for Favors, Williams, Tinsley, and Bell
Favors, Pierce, and Bradley are the only names in this deal you care about. Everybody keeps making noise about how Utah needs to trade a big, and then somehow ignoring the fact that the reason they need to trade a big is so they can build around Derrick Favors.
So yeah, fine, I'd do that deal. Moot point, though, because Utah wants to trade Al Jefferson, ride Milsap, and then build around Favors and Kanter. To suggest otherwise seems silly to me.
5) Pierce, Garnett, Sullinger, and Terry
MINNESOTA for Kevin Love, Andrei Kirilenko, Roy, Ridnour, and Steimsma
As a Celtics fan, I'm looking at that and saying "why the heck is Sullinger in there?" and if you're a Wolves fan, you are saying "why the heck is Kirilenko in there?"
The pieces in the deal are Pierce and Garnett and a shot at the championship this year for Kevin Love, who is Chris Brown to Minnesota's Rihanna.
It's a beautiful thing. Garnett retires with his original franchise, wins another ring, and brings his buddy Pierce with him.
Problem is, it's crazy. The Wolves aren't in the playoff picture right now, and they will have to get all those new pieces to fit fast to make their window. Yes, Wolves fans, Kevin Love is leaving you, but not for three years! If you take this deal, you're asking the dealer to hit you on an 18.
6. Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Jason Terry and Jared Sullinger
for Smith, Williams, Harris, Pachulia, and Ivan Johnson
This move is the height of ****ery. I can barely scratch the surface. I guess the idea is that we would have room to extend Smith for a max contract... and that would be... a good thing?
Look, someone is going to give Josh Smith the max. It will immediately be one of the worst contracts in the NBA. Smith is an extremely good player who is worth a solid 10-12 million. Over the duration of his next contract as his athleticism plateaus, his outstanding defensive game will deteriorate a bit, and the crazy shots he takes will get crazier. This deal amounts to us forging a deeply flawed new core, and paying Sullinger to the Hawks for the privilege.OTHER TEAMS
There's nothing for us here, guy.
WAY TO BURY THE LEAD, BIG GUY. Gosh, if only there was some team on the brink of contention with an analytic-minded front office, a head coach that is like a second father to Kevin Garnett, and young talent coming out of its ears. Never mind, I'm sure there's nothing to see here.
