We all know Doc's conversation with Ray Allen asking him to come off the bench behind Avery didn't go very well -- even though at first Doc tried to fool himself (and the media) that Ray was cool with it.

How do you think Paul might react to Doc asking him to come off the pine game behind Jeff Green, targeting 30-32 minutes per night, so he can close games out with more energy?

Exactly like Ray did.

Yeah, probably, which is disappointing.

Pierce would instantly be the best 6th man in the league.  It might help keep him fresher for the 4th quarter and be a real boon to the team.  Unfortunately, it's likely we'll never get to find out.

Well if PP truly accepts Celtic tradition they use to move the old vets to the bench for the young legs to do the heavy work load back when they were winning year after year.

But today is different times with different players and personalities. Could go either way.

There are a number of possibilities in terms of how he might react. I doubt even he knows how he'd react.

I think the real question (previous thread I know) is whether it helps the team.

As a historian he'll discover another great Pierce (Ricky) was a great 6th man (23 ppg from the bench in 89-90).

Manu, McHale, Harden, Hondo and many other great players have been key players from the bench.  Bill Walton was our 6th man in 85-86.

I really can't see how it hurts the team. Id love to at least try it out.

Can't recall any evidence to suggest he'd be that upset by it. It would be an easy sell a need for Green to become more involved and for Pierce to be fresh in order to close out games... he is, and always has been, our closer.

I feel the same.  What does it hurt at this point?  If we can turn things around a bit, just gives him a few less minutes a game.  Might make a difference come playoff time.

I think he'll accept it. IIRC he already has hinted that Father Time is catching up to him. He might give the starting job to Green if it is what is needed for the Cs.

He is already an elder statesman for the Cs and I believe he is embracing this role.

I don't think it's gonna happen at all now that Rondo is gone. Messes up the 2nd unit too much.

That's IMO the one remaining bit of lineup makeover the C's have to do with their current personnel.

Will they?  I suspect with Rondo out such a move would be delayed a bit longer, since Doc's used to Pierce sometimes doing more ball handling.  Also, if Danny were to be considering trading him, they might not want to bench him in a lead up to that.

But I think it will be good and important to see how having the four young guys and KG starting works for a few months, to help in evaluating who is part of the longer-term answer.

Oh, and what's interesting about our lapdog sports media is that nobody has apparently asked Pierce this question.

I thought Pierce said that he might be coming off the bench by the end of his current contract.
