League source confirms Grizzlies agree to send Marreese Speights, Josh Selby to Cavs for Jon Leuer. There is a pick involved in deal.

The trade saves the Grizzlies about $4M, pushing them under the tax line and eliminating financial need to move Rudy Gay this season.

Along with the two players, the pick goes to Cleveland in the deal, the price of giving Memphis the tax relief it was seeking.

Full deal is Speights, Selby, Ellington and pick to Cleveland for Jon Leuer. Welcome to luxury taxonomics.

Smart move -- Ellington is a loss though. He was their only reliable shooter outside of Conley.

I love what the Cavs are doing in cases like this. If only they could draft well.

Agreed -- and they don't have much they can trade now to grab a shooter before the deadline (should they want to take a stab at a banner).

I think their lack of shooters is going to stop Memphis from properly competing for a title. They have very strong talent at the top of their roster but they have failed to put an adequate supporting cast around them.

First or second round .... and out.

  • Everyone's excited for the new era.
I've always liked Speights.

Hollinger analysis -3 wins for Memphis   ;D

The Griz will roll the dice with snake bit Darrell Arthur as their third big.  Let's see if he can stay healthy.

Pondexter can play Ellington's minutes.  Both guys are stroking the threeball this season, at 42%, with Pondexter being a bit bigger and more versatile.

The Cavs pick up a scoring big, which they need.  They still have room to facilitate another team or two to duck under the cap.

Reports have the Griz also giving up a 2015 first round draft pick.

I understand how armchair GMs will say "good move" but I say "Don't buy a team if you can't dip into LuxTax land."  Timberlake should have just agreed to do "Friends With Benefits II."

I hope that 2015 pick ends up being a 5 time all star.  I don't like these deals based on economics instead of putting the best basketball team on the floor, especially for a contender.  However. Memphis has been operating under that model for a while now and has actually been able to build a contender, so they'll et the benefit of the doubt here.

Well so much for any deals containing Rudy Gay this season.

Delonte and TA reunited!

I like Delonte on that team. Memphis is going to be a handful to compete against in a 7 game series. Too many guys that Love to play physical and get after it. Also a lot more versatility with Delonte in that rotation now.

Those are nice deals. Vujacic is just as good as Ellington is.

Delonte West is better than any of their backup guards. Big upgrade.

Bill Walker is a nothing player and a waste of a roster but 2 for 3 is good shootin'.

I love what the Cavs are doing in cases like this. If only they could draft well.
you seem to imply they haven't been, which hasn't been the case at all (at least since Ferry was booted).  Irving was a no brainer, Thompson has been very good (esp. post-Varejao), Waiters is looking like a real player, and Zeller has been a monster since Varejao went out.  4 first round picks in the last two years and all 4 seem like real players and great value for the spot taken.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

Irving is the only one I am really sold on at this stage.

Jury is still out on the other three.
