• Greg Oden, the No. 1 pick in 2007 who hasn't played in an NBA game since 2009 due to a litany of knee injuries, is aiming for a comeback. Part of Oden's plan is to sign with a team in the next month and get into a training and conditioning program with an eye toward returning to the floor next season. The Celtics are among the teams monitoring Oden's progress, and sources tell CBSSports.com's Jeff Goodman that the Spurs and Cavaliers have expressed interest, too.

It all depends on the price, but if you can sign him to a contract that...

a. Gives you control of him next year at a reasonable price, and at least early bird rights to him after that(which a contract signed now would do)

and

b. Does not impede you too much from filling in the roster to compete this year (remember, the C's are very close to the apron)

Then its a no brainer.

We should give him an offer he can't refuse. Otherwise the Heat will steal him from us.

Very huge risk involved, but very high reward as well if it worked out.

How is it a huge risk? He won't get more than a Bass type MLE contract, doubt he even gets that much . Maybe 3 mil for next year at the most ?

Thats what I mean. Every team can offer him the MLE, which means Miami can as well.

If the Celtics offer him more than the MLE, he might sway in our favor because of the financial security. He'll be guaranteed more money in case (knock on wood) he just can't stay healthy enough to play in the NBA. That is what I'm suggesting. Pay him a lot of money so he wont consider any other teams. Unless those teams offer him more.

But there comes the risk, because we will be investing on a kid who's, well, fragile. But the turnout could be great as well. But we got to go all in here.

C's are over the cap, they can't offer more than the mle.

That I didn't know.

Well, I guess I'll be praying to the Basketball Gods a ton this year.

Celtics already used the MLE for this season.  They can't use it to sign him at the end of this season.

C's can basically offer him the minimum, which means he probably doesn't come here.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

They could offer him the LLE.  And I am not sure he would be getting much more than that right now.

He is just such an injury risk, that he is not going to be insurable.  I just don't see any teams giving much more than the minimum, at least as a guarantee.

And I am not sure he is looking for that.  I think he is looking for the right situation to revive his career, and hopefully showcase himself next year, so he can cash in the following year.

This is probably the reason why Miami and The Celtics haven't brought in some one like Birdman.

I'd bring him in on a MLE as long as they can trade for a big man this year. Then go on from there.

But man, if Oden can come back, imagine him next to KG next season...WoW!

Eh, I think its just about flexibility really.  They would have signed Birdman if they thought he could help and could be relied on.

But, for some reason, they don't, so they are keeping the roster spot open for trades, buyouts, or guys like Oden.  Its just really early in the season to be committing to those last roster spots.
