I guess I'll go with in no particular order

Star Wars (all)
Lord of the Rings/Hobbit
Godfather
Princess Bride
Kung Fu
Dances with Wolves
Glory
Borat
Caddyshack
Rudy
Animal House

Oh man. Have to make a cut. Probably Glory. Man that movie makes me cry. Yeah but Caddyshack makes me laugh. Maybe Dances with Wolves. It's way too long. Call it a tie to be decided by future events. The Passion is probably a dark horse that can't crack the list. The movie Tebow will surely kick one of these to the curb, but that isn't scheduled out for about a decade.

check this out. I'm thinking "Man. Glory didn't win best picture. I'm not even sure it was nominated. What year was that?"

Turns out it was 1989.

Check out this lineup of the best pic nominees
Driving Miss Daisy....winner
My Left Foot
Dead Poets Society
Born on the 4th of July
Field of Dreams....which makes me cry even more than Glory

So Morgan Freeman was in Driving Miss Daisy the same year as Glory.

So my coworker says "Wasn't practically every movie Morgan Freeman was in nominated best picture"

and I say "Well. No. For example he was in two Batman movies. No wait. One of them was nominated best picture."

I gotta change my vote. Take out Glory. Insert Field of Dreams

There are certain movies the academy needs to be embarrassed about winning best picture.

Shakespear in Love over Saving Private Ryan
Titanic over Good Will Hunting.

Good Will Hunting was freakin awesome...."Do you know how easy this is!"  "It's not your fault son"  "Do you wanna know how the old man beat me every night!"

To me I think it's worth pointing out various breakthrough type movies that just broke the mold or brought in new eras

Nightmare Before Christmas
Pulp Fiction...is this the first film that starts in the middle?
Jurassic Park...first realistic use of cgi that fooled ya
Big Fish
Psycho...first film that killed off the star fairly early in the film
Citizen Kane...isn't this the first movie that starts at the end?
Star Wars....first futuristic film that takes place in the past
Borat....I'm sorry but a Jew egg is just genius.
The Matrix...technically the movie starts inside a computer program
LOTR....just...wow
ET and Sound of Music....I kinda think these movies subtly changed the potential role of kids in movies. Moved them to the role of mega-protagonist
Lawrence of Arabia....first epic. First film that makes you sweat even if you're in an igloo with a tshirt
Singin in the Rain and West Side Story...how you can have that much talent on one screen is beyond me
Benjamin Button

I have no argument with the people that go with Godfather over Godfather 2. The AFI did that. Both movies are excellent excellent. But how does Godfather 1 beat Godfather 2? What does it have or do that the other one doesn't? Is it just more enjoyable? Was the Miami/Cuba thing too distracting? Is 2 just less romantic and enjoyable? Less New York? What's the theory there?

I loved 1 but enjoyed 2 more.  But it's splitting hairs in my opinion.  Both are phenomenal.  Also (IMO) 3 is the largest drop off of any sequal in movie history.   Not that 3 is the worst sequal movie in history (there have been some incredibly bad sequals), but in terms of drop-off I think it takes the prize.   From best ever stratosphere (1 and 2) to somewhere between mediocre and poor (3).

My Favorite 10 (no order):
Godfather 1
Godfather 2
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Midnight Express
The Killing Fields
Nashville
Jaws
Pulp Fiction
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
The Deer Hunter
