I just want to point out that Avatar stole from Last Samurai....which stole from Dances with Wolves...which stole from Little Big Man...which stole from Lawrence of Arabia

Avatar also is very similar to Pocahontas

Its truly amazing how many current movies are based on the stories of ancient literature.

How many movies are based on

Hamlet?
The Illiad?
Epic of Gilgamesh?
Oedipus Rex?
The New Testament?
Beowulf?
1001 Arabian Nights?
Argonatica?

And there's many more. The general background stories of most modern day stories(movies) have their beginnings in ancient literature. Simply put, if a story is great, the setting, characters, and small parts of the plot can change but as long as the general story is the same, it will still be great.

If this is interesting to you, there are a lot of pretty in depth studies on stories throughout our histories. What is Arthurian legend other than a gritty reboot of Jesus?

After looking into this a little deeper I've decided that's the biggest stretch of all time.

Every idea is borrowed from something though.  I don't think it's overly amazing.  There's only a fixed number of major show and movie themes.

1. Silence of the Lambs
2. Ground Hog Day
3. Jaws
4. Raiders of the Lost Ark
5. It's a Wonderful Life
6. Seven
7. The Wizard of Oz
8. The Great Escape
9. Arsenic and Old Lace
10. Schindler's List

That's the best I can do. It would be easier to do a top 20 but that one just took me 30 minutes of contemplation.

It was a good exercise. Thanks!
