The Memphis Grizzlies and Phoenix Suns are engaged in trade talks centered on forward Rudy Gay, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

The Grizzlies have been shopping Gay to multiple teams, and found an interested trade partner with the Suns, sources said.

There's no framework of a possible deal in place, but the Grizzlies have expressed a strong desire that any package involving Gay include Suns forward Jared Dudley and future first-round draft picks, sources said.

In an effort to avoid paying luxury tax in the short term, as well as get off the $16.8 million and $19.3 million owed Gay in the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons, new Memphis management has aggressively shopped Gay. The Grizzlies have made proposals on Gay to several teams, front-office sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Hmm wonder if the c's could get in on this and acquire Gortat?

 Suns sends: Dudley , Gortat,filler, 1st
 Suns get  : Gay, Bass

Mem sends: Gay
Mem gets : Dudley, Lee , boston 1st,suns 1st

Bos sends: Lee, Bass,1st,
Bos gets: Gortat

Because it's Wojo, I'll pay attention to this rumor.

Sounds intriguing. But what happens to Memphis' offense without Gay? More burden on Conley/ZBo/Gasol?

I was walking along the road with two friends
the sun was setting
suddenly the sky turned blood red
I paused, feeling exhausted, and leaned on the fence
there was blood and tongues of fire above the blue-black fjord and the city
my friends walked on and I stood there trembling with anxiety
and I sensed an infinite scream passing through nature.

If the Suns are going to acquire Rudy Gay I don't see why they'd be eager to move Gortat. I know he and the coach have had issues though.

I don't see us bringing enough to make it worth either team's time though.

Yeah, though their offense hasn't been hot stuff with Gay anyways.

I guess they figure they'd be better of with just 3 point shooters instead of Gay? Dudley can do that for them, I wonder what the other pieces would be though.

http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=b7thoj8

Why would they involve a third team?

Suns trade: Dudley, Wes Johnson, Telfair (Both Johnson and Telfair are on 1 yr contracts) 2013 1st, 2015 1st
Griz Trade: Rudy Gay

Would Memphis want to include Wes, if the goal is to trim payroll? Is he required to make the numbers work?

Assuming the Suns do get Rudy, what does their projected lineup look like? Dragic/Gay/Gortat/Scola . . . ?

I actually think this makes a lot of sense for all teams involved.  Might need some tweaking, depending on the personal preferences of each team, but it seems to work.

This deal actually might work even better:

Boston gets Gortat

Memphis gets Dudley, Lee, and a first rounder from Boston and Phoenix

Phoenix gets Gay and Melo

For Boston needs no explanation.  Turn spare parts to fill a need.

For Memphis, they get two guys who fit well with their identity, but make a lot less money than Gay.  Lee also can be insurance in case the lose Allen this summer.

And Phoenix gets a quality wing to build around.

nice Chris, I had something very similar in my trade checker a second ago (I had Melo going to Memphis but this way saves them more money)

the only thing is it gives them 2 SGs to add to Tony Allen so that might be too much?

either deal sounds great but not seeing the appeal for PHX.  Gay's deal is just horrible.  he's a decent player but not worth that much salary.  They aren't really close to having a contending team so why add a decent player on a really bad deal?  are tehy planning to keep him after the deal expires but at half the price?  can't see any other line of reasoning behind it.

Dragic, Gay, Morris is a nice core.

How so? Dragic is a fine guard but 15/6.5 isn't going to bring you very far. Morris is young but under 42% shooting on your way to 8/4 in 20 minutes isn't a nice piece. I'm not really understanding this trade. Phoenix is sending out young assets and cap space for a guy who is expensive on a long-term contract and will best-case bring them to #9-10 in the conference. Memphis is saying screw this year and build for the future around...Marc Gasol and an aging Randolph? Best case is they get back to where they are now. They have a legit shot at it, especially with one or two minor moves (Terry?). Why give up on that? I get the financials, but a team winning should look to make one minor change to solidify position and the bad team should be trying to plan for the future, not the other way around.

To me, both teams end up worse off.
