Totally different roles for different teams.

Scoring/spacing aside, I think the defense and rebounding is the real difference.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

Can you explain what you mean?.  They are both mediocre defenders and rebounders.

What do they do differently?  I think it'd be difficult to find two guys with more similar roles.  Pure floor spacers.  Ray drives the ball/attacks the rim more and has a bigger role in the clutch, but overall I wouldn't say "totally different."

Self-explanatory.  Ray is only an average defender and rebounder, and I thought it was clear he's superior to Terry in those areas both now and throughout their careers (and not insignificantly).

Edit:  For the record, Ray's rebound rate doubles Terry's.

I guess I misspoke.  Their style of play is different is more accurate.  Still, completely different teams.

Ray Allen has the luxury of playing off of James and Wade.  He is an afterthought for defenses.  Terry gets more attention.  Switch the players on their respective teams, and you'd like see a different story.  Ray would still be more efficient but less effective overall.  Terry would likely be more efficient, but probably have the same averages in raw numbers.

That being said, sure Ray is playing better for certain.  Terry has just been really bad on offense this year in strecthes.  He has had some good games though.  Terry is probably better on defense, as bad as he has been.  Ray has killed Miami's defense this year when he is on the court.

What do they do differently?

Jason Terry is a combo guard.  Ray is a pure 2-guard.  Terry was brought in to play both the 1 and the 2, which he does.

Terry is also a bench player at this point in his career.  We have played him too much in our starting lineup.  He was on pace for the most games started since his 2006-2007 season with Dallas before AB came back.

Ray left us because we benched him.

Two totally different roles.

Ah okay.  I concede "totally different teams."

I don't think there would be all that much difference if we traded Jason Terry for Ray Allen tomorrow.  Ray is statistically more efficient this year but I think Jason Terry is a little more versitile (more of a creater, can play some PG,...).  Ray may be a little more clutch as well so OK, maybe a slight edge to Ray.

Haha, Courtney Lee brings up the ball more than Terry.  He's certainly not playing much backup point for us.  Sure he guards some 1s, but he's nothing close to the combo guard he was in Dallas.

Honestly, this year Ray handles the ball more as a 2 than Terry does at both positions.
